It's 2025 -- What Are You Reading?

Not sure audiobooks are reading but close enough. I’ve been on a Carl Hiaasen binge, mostly for long distance driving. He chronicles wacky Florida and “Florida man” behavior usually with an environmental twist. Highly entertaining escapism. Keeps you alert while driving…as opposed to a Noam Chomsky read. I started with Bad Monkey because I noticed the TV series on Apple TV and figured the source material might be better…

Bad Monkey made me want to pick up a few Hiaasen books for sure!

I didn’t watch Bad Monkey yet but the books (2) are definitely worth checking out. Can’t make this stuff up fiction and weirdness. Never knew who Hiaasen was before.

I have a friend who teaches in Gainesville, and a lot of his posts used to start with “Carl Hiaasen’s FL,” so I eventually looked him up.

The Onion.

Oh wait, it’s the New York Times.

:banana::banana::banana:

What a time to be alive.

Sad to hear, Tom Robbins passes at 92.:persevere:
His ECGTB is a classic. So many other titles are great, too.

This was reviewed in the NYT today, and it’s on my short list for Berlin (I’d rather read it in German).

Listened to this recently. Whodunit mixed into a Great British Bake Off knock off.

@ML8000 , I “read” that one!

After finishing all of Thursday Murder Club books, started “We Solve Murders”, while also reading

I didn’t realize you could link to Libby’s review, info. Libby is an excellent app, very convenient. I can’t remember the old app that many public libraries used before but it was kind of a deterrent as in not easy to use.

In SF we used to have Overview; I much preferred it.

We have Overdrive and I’ve been very happy with it over the years. I’m not too picky though the selection offered.

:astonished: Thanks!

We presume you’re familiar with Dave Robicheaux and Clete Purcel. We wouldn’t recommend Clete to be your introduction to James Lee Burke:

Good to know! I was just about to ask.

I borrowed this one

but I might start with this

From its start, the Robicheaux series evokes sense of place and culture. (We regularly had to be in SW Louisiana for a stretch long ago; and places he describes serving enjoyable diet and drink are among our memories.)

Go with the early books, the later ones have caused me to remove him from my must read list.

Here’s a link to a list.
