It's 2025 -- What Are You Reading?

That came immediately to mind. Also 2001, The Exorcist and (for something within recent memory) Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret, which was a pretty awesome movie!

I loved that book! And you liked the movie? I should add it to my bucket list then.

The hair and clothes alone are worth the price of admission. Plus, you will be reminded of aspects of the book you had forgotten, if you are like me.

That’s how I will forever feel about The Neverending Story.

Just started this….hilarious stuff. Lamb: the Gospel According to Biff, “the life of Christ as seen by his boyhood pal, Biff.”

BTW, I agree read the book first. 90% of the time it’s better than the movie. One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest is an exception. Read it for HS English when the movie came out, which started the habit of reading book first.

I like to be swept away when I watch a movie, don’t want to see previews; they give away too much.

So, I’ll read the book AFTER.

I think the only way you should see Gone With the Wind is in a movie theater. Growing up, I was a book worm but hated long novels so had never read the book.

Finally, a few years ago, I read the book. I was so surprised … no lengthy unnecessary cloud descriptions … the characters were described exactly how the actors portrayed them and … I hated arriving to the last page of the book. Vivian Leigh was superb.

My daughter has read East of Eden several times. Also several times: The Tin Drum. We saw the movie together in a theater. Loved it. Many years later, I read the book.

I prefer the movie, she prefers the book.

The summer I was thirteen I read GWTW and fell in love with Ashley Wilkes. At the end of the summer the movie came to one of our theaters and a group of us went to see it. I was the only one who had read the book. I believe that had enhanced my viewing. The show was a matinee, when we got out, it was dark outside; we’d never been to such a long show.

That sounds funny and heretical – I just downloaded it on your recommendation.

Ever since I was 12 years old, GWTW is probably my favorite book/movie of all time. Read the book first and movie next. Hard to believe she wasted all those years loving that weakling Ashley Wilkes. When she could have had a real man like Rhett Butler. Like he said. Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.

Its hilarious and the references are accurate and well researched, likely to defend against accusation of heresy.

I think I remember reading that the author, in her youth, was in love with a man like Ashley. Could he have been gay?

So many actresses wanted the role of Scarlett … people like Betty Davis, Katherine Hepburn, definitely the wrong choice

Done! All the back issues of The New Yorker are now behind me and ready to be donated to the free shelf. ✓ one off the ‘to do’ list.

Ashley Wilkes was not gay to the best of my knowledge. He was in love with his wife Melanie and lusted after Scarlett. And it really didn’t get him anywhere.

Yep- There were a lot of actresses up for the part. But Vivien Leigh pulled it off. That’s for sure. I really can’t see Bette Davis in the role of Scarlett.

And she absolutely hated Clark Gable. She said he reeked like an ashtray for the kissing scenes & was overall a total ass. Apparently, the feeling was mutual.

Now that’s acting!

Written by a friend of a friend. Interesting take, for sure.

You were right! I am adjusting to the narrator. She’s no George Guidall, but I’ll live.

Thank you too, @TheLibrarian28
