Have not been myself, but they are booking some high quality Jazz bands.
A guy in my building is a huge fan. It’s expensive, which is one reason I haven’t been.
Close Up on Orchard is also doing some good jazz. Tickets have been around $25 when I’ve gone.
I haven’t been to Lucinda’s yet- used to trek out to Skinny Dennis for my country/honkytonk fix. I should check it out.
Update: I’m at Lucinda’s right now. Cute lil honkytonk. A band is on the tiny stage and whoever is doing the sound is really good - I’m less than 20 feet from them and I can comfortably have a conversation (and it’s a five-piece) while still hearing every instrument.
I’m a fan of the place, but the layout is unfortunate with that bottleneck between the bar area and the band room when the place is crowded (as it always seems to be when I’m there).
that spot has had a rough go for a while. hoping Lucinda can keep it afloat.
I thought it was just Brownie’s? Did I miss a few incarnations?
I think it goes: Brownie’s, then HiFi, then Coney Island Baby, then Lola, then East Berlin, then Heaven Can Wait…then Lucinda’s.
I’m happy to make a correction. Although Yelp shows Mama Tried as closed, its Instagram page shows it alive and well, with current calendar listings. The Yelp listing shows the wrong address for Mama Tried, so maybe that accounts for the erroneous report that it has closed. Also, it’s in Sunset Park, not Red Hook.
Ah, that does look right. Totally missed Lola and East Berlin and I pass the place on the bus all the time.
Yeah. Most any of the really unique places for alternative, rock and exploratory work are gone, sadly like Brownie’s, Cake Shop, Under Acme, Pyramid…etc…
All this reminiscing about clubs in the east village brings back one of my fonder memories. Way back when I was so much younger I frequented lots of dingy clubs with upstart bands made up of struggling young musicians and singers. Through odd circumstances I as a young guy in finance started dating a talented singer. She had a gorgeous voice to match her sultry Mediterranean looks. One week night her band was performing in a club whose name I can’t remember. I left work and went directly to the show in my suit as we still wore them. The only stiff in a suit in the joint. I watched her set and afterwards went to the restroom. As I am standing at the urinal doing my business a couple of other guys were chatting about how hot the singer was. I agreed with them and said I liked her so much I was going to try to take her home with me. Everyone gave me a good laugh. As they saw me leave with her, I heard something like it must be the suit.
