Ice cream or gelato? Is there a difference?

I think ice cream is now called Philadelphia style ice cream, and frozen custard is now called ice cream.

I’m reading David Lebovitz’s book, Philadelphia style ice cream is by mixing milk or cream with sugar and other ingredients and French-style are custard based, emulsifying egg yolks.
