How Do You Organize Your Spices?

It was a rubbish container that didn’t seal well.
Indonesia may produce some tasty stuff, but good packaging is another story.
Obviously, if it had any merit, I would’ve reused it, à la the Manantial de las Flores jar.

In our never-ending atttempt to make our house fit for airbnb’ing (and just to get an overview what’s all there), I cleaned out / reorganized our spice/oil/vinegar cabinets and the countertop space near the stove.

While cleaning out the baking shelf, which is solely my PIC’s responsibility, I unearthed this treasure:

Also, we apparently really like cayenne pepper & celery salt.

I tossed almost 75% of herbs and spices, as their expiration date had long ago passed. Happy about the reorganization. Hope it stays this way.

Erma Bombeck once wrote that she had several jars of fenugreek, because every time she had a recipe requiring it, she would buy a jar, thinking, “Well, of course I don’t have any fenugreek in the house.”

I think at one point we had 4 different containers of cayenne in the house

I take pictures of my spice rack and the book series that i am missing a volume or two from the series.
That way if i am in the grocery store or book store i can buy just the ones i need.
And yet i just noticed my most recent spice foto is over a year old… Whoops.

That’s a clever idea!

In my kitchen of many spices, there are two places where ready-to-use spices live: a drawer for all the bulk spices decanted into jars, and one level of a two-tier lazy susan for the tins and jars that are too tall for the drawer (the upper level has tins of tea). In a pantry cabinet and in my freezer, for refills, I have bagged bulk spices from Penzey’s and Oaktown Spice Shop, and jars of (excellent) Kirkland-brand peppercorns and Vietnamese cinnamon from Costco. I buy smaller quantities of bulk spices from my local market, too.

The drawer is overdue for a clean-out and reorganization. It always starts out alphabetized, but never stays that way.

We’ve got three of the double-decker ones and two single-level ones. The two on the counter here hold tea and spices, the other double-decker has containers of dried fruit and some specialty baking ingredients. One of the singles has baking stuff like baking powder and soda, cornstarch, etc., and the other is here with vinegars, soy sauce, fish sauce, hot sauce, etc. They’re super handy for seeing/reaching stuff.

I have a double and two single turny-go-rounds in my spice cabinet. Love them.

My spice storage looks a lot like yours. I also have started storing some opened cello packs of spices in airtight tins, and small jam size Bernardin jars. My Serbian paprika is staying fresh longer in the glass jar, with more fragrance , than my tin of Spanish paprika. Both were purchased around a year ago.

I have 3 cookie tins filled with spices, as well. One for Indian spices, another Mexican spices I don’t use frequently, and another for dried chiles.
