Hagelslag Dutch Sandwich

Yeah, I’d try one of these. You?

There are a few different colours of sprinkles in addition to chocolate available.

I would try it. Guess I’ll add it to my 2026 goals!

Sounds sort of like fairy bread:

I have tried it. I’ve found the sprinkles (or “hundreds & thousands” in English English) are a not uncommon addition to the breakfast buffet in Netherlands hotels. As I recall, I’ve tried it twice - the second to confirm whether I liked it or not. I don’t.

It’s decidedly kids food for me.

I wouldn’t. Or didn’t. Someone bought me a box of those sprinkles once and they languished for years before I eventually tossed them.

I would definitely try one but we seem to have a shortage of Dutch restaurants here.

I’m sure in advance it won’t come close to being as good as the broiled cinnamon toast I grew up on as a breakfast sweet, but I’ll be a good sport and try one.

We found hagelslag for my Dutch husband locally here in the US but it got so expensive recently he had his cousin and friends bring a stash over when they came to visit. That’s when I saw the different kinds. He eats it occasionally but didn’t like the idea of being without it. When his cousins, including kids, came to visit us in South Africa they immediately headed to the supermarket where they could get their supply of hagelslag. I can’t remember if I’ve even tried it. It’s more a Dutch food than stroopwafels, a comfort food.

spent about a year and a half on a project in Amsterdam. I kept seeing guys eat this sweet, dessert-for-lunch thing, and eventually gave in, honestly, it was great but I just tried it one time.

They had beer in the lunchroom, but I was warned the quickest way to get sent home was to drink it at lunch. My favorite tradition was how many meetings came with cappuccino and cookies. Highly civilized.

Best,
