Grocery shopping in Ontario: a skyrocketing price thread

I happen to dislike Mexican asparagus, so the price won’t affect me personally. Maybe we shouldn’t really be eating fresh asparagus in Canada in October.

Gah! That’s a lot for asparagus! I think I will wait until next spring when the local asparagus is in season.

I just checked the Sobeys flyer. Asparagus is $2.99 / lb starting tomorrow.

This was at an independent grocery store in London called Remark Fresh Market, which typically has better prices than Loblaws and Sobeys on some vegetables, but apparently not on Asparagus. :joy:

I notice the vegetables at Super Store are often cheaper than Remark, but the Remark vegetables are typically in better shape and last longer, so I end up buying most vegetables at Remark.

It was the price of the asparagus that caught my eye.

Thanks for posting a better deal for the Canadians who buy asparagus in October! :slightly_smiling_face:

The only times I eat asparagus in Canada is only during Canadian local asparagus season. lol

It’s why I have post-its on each month of my kitchen calender. Each has what’s in season. It’s an easy way to remind myself before I hit the store.

It’s currently $5.99 at Whole Foods

Good to know!

I haven’t been shopping at Whole Foods, since I left the Annex in 2023.

Sometimes, the produce can be pretty reasonably priced.

When I’m in Toronto, I buy most of my produce at the produce shops in Little Italy or Koreatown, or at Fiesta Farms.

The produce at the Annex Metro and Little Italy Metro sucks relative to the Metros , Sobeys, Superstores and Loblaws in the burbs and in southwestern Ontario.

I’m currently playing $4.99/ lb for imported Pluots. That’s the main import I’m currently buying . Oh, and lemons.

Nice big lemons range from 85 cents to $1.29 at my 2 go to indie shops in the LondonON area ($1.29 at Remark, $0.85 at Thomas Brothers in the country)

My loaf of sesame topped challah from Harbord Bakery is currently costing $6.50 CAD.

Cheese blintzes are $4.95 each, which is fair.

Bush’s beans are $2 a can at Metro right now, which is a good price.

metro in Ottawa has Lactantia butter on sale for $4.44 for a 1 lb. brick. And their blackberries are on sale for $1.99 for a 170g package. They will go great in my smoothies this week!

I did a big shop at Sobeys today. Canned milk, one of my staples, which is regularly priced at $2.99/ can was on sale for $2.49/ can, so I stocked up.

Prices for some things, as of Feb 2025:

The British imports at my local Sobeys.

255 g Imported British HP in glass

400 ml Canadian-made HP in plastic

The imported goods selection keeps expanding.

Wow KD has gone up in price since I started working. It was a staple for me since I was working as a casual in those days.

It still goes on sale fairly often, for somewhere between $1.50 and $2 a box.

I used to make KD, Annie’s or PC mac and cheese around once a month until maybe 2 years ago.

One dining companion stopped liking it. I’ve only been making home-made mac and cheese since then.

OMG! British food envy! We can get HP here locally (plastic bottle only), but for Heinz beans or Caramel bars we have to drive 50 miles.

Farm Boy has Mexican asparagus on sale for $3.99/lb this week. I bought some last weekend for the regular price ($4.99/lb) and it’s pretty good for out-of-season asparagus.
