from Simit-Chi on Bloor in the Annex:
anise ring cookies on the left, cinnamon walnut cookies in the middle, tahini cookies on the right.
Today’s delivery was from Mayrik and fared a lot better than the promo items from before. Had the combo for 3-4 ppl. Added a couple of hummus as well. Decent amount of food and had non fillers a salad on side and couple of dips
At the edge of Little India, Döner Palace was easy for us to pass by as we headed towards some of our favourites in the neighborhood. So last night, we finally tried it, albeit just a mixed vegetable pide. The verdict: pretty good. The dough had a nice flavour, a bit thinner than the version we are used at Pizza Pide. The veggies were a nice mix of peppers, tomatoes, and spinach. And the accompaniments included pickled hot peppers, tomato slices, raw onion, pickled cucumbers, tasty hummus, and a pleasant yoghurt-based sauce. We would like to go back to try the lahmacun pide, the kebabs, or the döner itself.
Technically Persian food had a delivery from Shattar Abbas. Good stuff and worth the price premium imo. Jujeh and chicken kobideh are quite good. Not in pic Kashk Bademjan. Hmmm didn’t enjoy that
Had a delivery from Parkway restaurant for Jojeh. Decent stuff and they give a bit of sumac packs to spice up the otherwise bland taste profile that’s expected of this dish. While it’s not to the level of refinement of Shattar Abbas it will do just fine imo at this price point
Today’s lunch was at Milos.
Here is the play by play
A solid lunch offering for what you pay here.
Toronto location is stunning imo with an amazing open feel that’s hard to replicate. Service was decent as well though we should have asked for the 1 hour lunch as our second course lagged a bit. Octopus starter is immaculate as ever. Grilled fish is fresh and delicate. Done very well again. At this price point it’s a great value proposition so give them a try. Solid 4 stars.
I think I’ll be returning to Sarajevo Grill in Etobicoke this weekend. I really enjoyed their cevap and burek on a previous visit.
It’s a Bosnian-run establishment with a grill, a hot table, and some groceries. There are some tables with seating, as well.
Adding links for various businesses serving Balkan food in Etobicoke for reference.
in Mississauga
Beyond the GTA, Marco’s Bakery is a Macedonian Bakery in Burlington, ON, that sells burek.
What was the damage per person? I was thinking of going to their family set menu on Sunday with a few friends in tow. @DrJohn reported a while back on a dinner visit which pushed me towards mamakas when friends visited.
My friend and I split these 3 dishes, and we each had a cocktail. It came to around $158 each, after tax, before tip, because the lobster spaghetti is market price.
The 4 course Sunday meal costs $95 before tax.
…
I prefer the food at Milos.
The space feels more corporate than Mamakas.
The service was professional.
We dropped in briefly at Mak European Delicatessens, but didn’t have enough room for more than a cheese burek, which was very good. Tasty pastry filled with feta, ricotta, and dry cottage cheese. Will have to come by with an emptier stomach to try the cevapi, which looked and smelled great.
Gosh I miss that place. Sigh
Christina’s and Kalyvia have closed.
Koutouki GiaMas has opened next to Kalyvia West of Arundel.
What had been Omonia 10 years ago is now a busy Tim’s.
The word from Greek friends is that Athens East of Pape is the best one right now.
Mezes tonight. Mezes continues to be my favourite Greek option on the Danforth for food and atmosphere. The tables are set further apart and the space feels less crowded than most other Greek restos on the Danforth.
They no longer take reservations. They have a waitlist.
My maroulosalata, $16. $5 extra for feta option
I also ordered 1 chicken stick and 1 pork stick.
My friend ordered chicken souvlaki in a pita, and added options of Horiatiki and Greek Fries.
Turns out Kalyvia is renovating. Stay tuned.
We do like Mezes, particularly the lamb chops, the gigantes, and the other appetizers.
Kalyvia is pretty good, but I haven’t been in a long while. I also used to like Omonia a lot, particularly for the quail and the roast lamb.
I continue to have a soft spot for Astoria, partly because I have been going to it since the late 70s, back when it was a greasy souvlaki counter with pinball machines in the back (and located next door in what became Cafe Demetre). I think they still do grilled meats well and I like their yoghurt dessert with quince jelly.
I like the pork souvlaki and lamb souvlaki at Astoria.(I don’t tend to order chicken or beef souvlaki, as much, anywhere)
Astoria is on my list for Greek places on the Danforth where I order take-out souvlaki. I like it better than Messini.
I was surprised to see Mezes no longer offers spanakopita or tiropita as mezes. The list of vegetable mezes that are not cold dips is now much smaller than it once was. Most mid-range Greek restos seem to be simplifying or streamlining their menus.
The grilled quail are good at Mezes, as well. I order them for one DC, as take-out.
I will try Koutouki GiaMas soon.
Had the zirh kebab from koz bingol. Decent with a promo I guess. Came with an extra pita and couple of dips
