Remember when Ossington was the relatively cheap place to open your doors?

Oh the old Landlord’s Relative Wants It story. I love that one. Please let us know if that actually happens.

I remember when it was mostly wholesale grapes, a few businesses that looked like fronts, and not well lit. I would have been driving north on Ossington after a night at the Drake so I wouldn’t have noticed Venezia Bakery or the shops closer to Dundas.

My friend’s son wanted to open up a Wild Wings on Ossington in 2006, and I told my friend I thought it was a pretty dodgy stretch. LOL Obviously, I am not in real estate

I was waiting in line to get inside the first location of Pizzeria Libretto on Ossington about 2 years later.

Golden Wheat Bakery’s College location, which is 2 doors from Coco’s, shut down that location a while back because of a rent hike. The space was still vacant 2 weeks ago. I will check on all these places next time I’m in the hood.

The Coast to Coast also shut down its College St location for the summer months. I’m not sure if it opened up again as the sign suggested it would.

The UK Indian Bistro (or something like that, northern Indian) also closed on College. The 3 Indian restaurants on College between Clinton and Shaw have had trouble ($$ Samrat and $$$ Rooh being the other 2)

$$ Mannat at College and Ossington is 10 times busier in terms of walk in traffic. And it’s set up well for dine in or takeout

In a way, affordable and mid-range, non-trendy College Street restaurants and coffee shops are like a canary in a gold mine, in terms of telling us how the Toronto economy is doing.

There are quite a few new upscale and trendy restaurants on College, between Clinton and Palmerston.

It’s a different kind of business for them.

Those new trendy spots are probably needing close to $75 before tax and tip per customer each day to stay in business, whereas I bet the average customer at Golden Wheat was spending less than $15 on each visit.

V’s Schnitzel House in Etobicoke

I have a feeling there will be a lot more closures announced over the next 3 months.

I know all of us who post here support small business.
