I can move in right away.
Coincidentally, my wife just asked what I wanted for the holidays. I said a new mom, a sister, and sushi. She nodded like this wasn’t the strangest thing I’d ever said.
I wonder how long it will be till the proles can approach this place. I thought the label on the melon was interesting!
@small_h, Actually, it was thinking about how much you would enjoy this food that finally spurred me to post here. It is in one sense ridiculously expensive, $300 before drinks, and in another, just unlike anything I have ever eaten before. So, yeah, @vinouspleasure, more expensive than sushi sam (but it’s not sushi, so there is that). @JenKalb, my son told me that last Saturday after the review on Tuesday that the waitlist topped 350 people. Crazy! The restaurant has a phone and it is ringing off the hook. I don’t know how they are handling that. And the melon is something called “Shizuoka”, flown in carefully from Japan, and again was essence of melon delish!
Oh, I would love it. She says, sitting here figuring out what crazy sum she’ll pay for health insurance in 2026. ![]()
Well I guess it will be a keeper and my chance will come. I loved watching the video of the chef, he is quite expressive! And the thing with the melon - leaving the sticker on showing the special origin seems particularly Japanese - in a sense it is presented still in its packaging, like a special gift. Thanks so much for sharing all this!
The chef is a doll! A friend of mine who read the review asked me if part of my son’s duties were to go and collect those fall leaves that were decorating dishes and platters. I asked my son: “No, Chef goes out to the park in the middle of the night and collects them. I just have to tend to them once they are in the restaurant.” He seemed to be quite pleased that he gets them for free, “I pay taxes for them!” he quipped.
The one in Tangram is Tai-Er Sauerkraut Fish, nestled between Pop Mart and Akiba House for all of your blind box needs.
My restaurant boyfriend SSAW is still knocking it out of the park.
Snails, char/yellowtail/branzino sashimi, scallops & chanterelles, snow crab chawanmushi, mentaiko with rice, blue cheese ice cream and some sort of espresso sake thing I didn’t ask I just drank it (twice).
anyone been to Okdongsik? anyone want to go?
On my list, count me in!
Queens or 30th street? I am interested if I am here (in and out of town in January)
Still keen on eating at Sauerkraut Fish, or Nai Brother, or another suan cai yu restaurant?
Yes!
