Jim and I were in the neighborhood, Wu’s Wonton King was packed so we went to KOPITIAM (first time) tonight. Food we had was great, we went for the oyster egg noodles (top of the menu) withshrimp and sambal, pandan chicken, juicy and tasty, and the water spinach with sambal - super good plenty of blachan funk, wished we had rice to extend the sambal left over - we wound up spooning it up. Sorta weird menu, I just wanted a cup of tea and had to pay $5 for a super strong big cup of black tea (didnt want any of their sweet milky concoctions Dishes on other tables, include THICK pandan toasts lookedd great too. Want to go back! Limited menu, but on the same level as HAINAN CHICKEN HOUSE. A tiny boom in really good Malaysian food. Maybe should start a Malaysian thread and move these posts over there.
I don’t think those oyster noodles were on the menu last time I was there. I need to get back there, obviously.
current Kopitiam menu (oyster noodles are NOT in a thick savory gravy)

the kaya toast served at an adjoining table looked incredible, but warning they have sign saying to clean your own table - its not a super clean place if you care about that. Whats coming out of the kitchen is fantastic though.
I’ve been there many times, but only for breakfast or lunch, and I didn’t notice any issues with cleanliness. Probably gets worse as the day goes on, and you were there for dinner, right? It’s very hard for me to stray from the oyster omelet, 'cause I love it so much.
next time for the oyster pancake. [I wrote something longer about the ambience but well going here is all about delicious food so have deleted any more]
The food is great - we went a while back at the start of a chinatown crawl. Thought a group meal there would be great but the lack of reservations and single large table make it tricky.
(It’s a coffee shop so the coffee and tea pricing isn’t that surprising.)
Ok but what happened to me - silly me I wanted a cup of tea - but not with all those sweet milks or lemon and sugar in it. What they gave me was a full cup of extremely strong black tea made for their sweetened and diluted products which i could not drink without gulping down the bitter hot stuff and adding water. This was $5. I should have just asked for a glass of water in the first place and saved the money. Nope no attempt to dissuade or explain.
I understand and sympathize, but I wouldn’t expect a coffee / tea place to argue with a customer’s tea / coffee request
PIZZA SUPREMA
A good slice, but $7 (with toppings) seems like something is very wrong in the world.
even if they thought I misunderstood what was on offer or my request was insane? Maybe not.
Stash a couple of tea bags in your purse and buy a cup of hot water.
Aunt Dora, is that you, back from the dead?
I’ve also got a peppermint in my sleeve!
And a tissue tucked under your bra strap?
How long has it been since I shilled for Gouie 2.0, aka SSAW? Too long. Before they go full prix fixe (at $160, so too rich for my blood), they did some preview sake/a la carte nights. Of course I went, how could I not? Absolutely wonderful meal. Highlights: seared grunt fish sashimi, uni and snow crab, pressed salmon sushi, and of course sake sake sake.
Very nice spread. I’ve a question that you can not-answer if you wish: Your array of delectables can’t have come cheap. How did they compare with the $160 you balk at? Of course, the feast above might have been for more than one.
