GOOD EATS NYC 2024 (A Blanket Thread)

Yes, I said that here:

It was not enough! I have the leftover octopus and sardines, and I am dragging out some sauces to enhance them. I have already rejected sauce-I-used-as-an-artichoke-marinade, because I’ve fallen out of love with it.

I think lemon-good olive oil-oregano and maybe a bit of hot paprika to dresh your fishes - some parsley and salt would probably do it? In turkey they grill fish with a mix of sumac-oregano-aleppo pepper flakes on top - olive oil, lemon and salt too, of course, and its pretty darn good with the onion/sumac/lemon/parsley garnish alongside.

I have all these things, and this is a good excuse to use the olive oil my friend brought me from Turkey (in a repurposed jar, in her luggage, to my wedding, I have weird friends).

Going out on the balcony to pick herbs.

It was a success with this guy.

I hate when the servers hover like this.

“Are you still working on that?”

Hate, hate, hate that phrase. Unless it’s coming from a cat, of course.

Followed by: “and how are we liking our first bites?”

That damn “we.”

My personal fave: “Our food is meant for sharing”

Sad what it’s become! Hello, are you familiar with what it used to be before? Parking garages, porn shops and fast food? Other than the late Queen there was very little worthwhile on Court Between Atlantic and Montague. At least now you can get decent tacos. The Heights was never known for good food. Has changed for the better over the past several years.

I always love the introductory “is this your first time visiting us, yes, well let me explain our format, small plates meant for sharing” as though we have stumbled on to something brilliant and unique that needs to be explained

Same here. But then we look around and are astonished at how many people dont share anything

For us a more useful introduction would be “Our food is not meant for sharing. If you do that you’ll be escorted out”

Like this, you mean?

Well, don’t forget that there are still places that charge for sharing. Different type of place, but still.

Sure, but that’s usually for when people dont order enough food. Different kind of ‘Sharing’

Yes, I believe I do recall what it was:

Morrocan star was on the corner of Atlantic and court, there was a wonderful polish bakery at the corner of schermerhorn and court, as you state, queen is gone, there was oriole deli, which sometimes had a line out the door for their rotisserie chicken, there was a diner that had wonderful potato pancakes. There was a small fish market serving fried fish sandwiches with a wonderful hot sauce and deep fried vegetables served with soy sauce.

I’m sure there were others, I lived a block off court from 1982-1992.

This from the website warning of one of my favorite (and very idiosyncratic, if that isn’t an oxymoron) restaurants in Paris (translated by Google from the French):

“each person having access to a seat in the establishment may only consume:
two starters, one main course and one dessert at most
(exception possible for cheese)
washing it down with all the drinks available on site
or
two starters or one main course (at least)
washing it down with all the drinks available on site
or
must pay twenty euros”

We overlapped at the tail end of your time. I didn’t live a block off Court but right on it. Walked up and down everyday. I recall the evening when some poor guy got shot in the back while at the ATM at the old Chemical Bank on the corner of Joralemon. I got mugged one evening coming home. My car got broken into on multiple occasions. It was a pretty dodgy stretch. My perspective is that 30+ years later there is maybe a little bit of rose tinting in the recollection.

I don’t recall Moroccan Star? What corner? The northeastern was the garage that covered nearly the full block. To the southeast was the closed bank that is now Trader Joe’s. The northwestern was a jumble of stores and the southeastern had some middle eastern shops. For middle eastern the best in the area now is AlBadawi. Until I went there I had no idea how good middle eastern food could be. Was always just fine before but this place blows away all the other ME places in the area. You should take your son there.

The fish market was right by the porn theater. Typical fish market that also had fried fish. I don’t recall anything special about it. There were several just like it in the area. I do miss stores like it now. All there is in its place is Fish Tales which is too bougie for my tastes. I recall Oriole. Okay chicken but Daily Provision is far better. Okay it’s south of Atlantic but barely.

Taco Al Pastor is a far better replacement. Good tacos on freshly made tortillas. Those tortillas smell amazing when they come hot off the flat top. My Little Pizzeria has also been there forever it seems and is a very serviceable neighborhood place. Bahnmigos makes good bahn mi.

I don’t recall the bakery being Polish. Seemed pretty Italian to me. Went there to get biscotti and reginas. People used to joke it had to be a front for the mob as there were so few customers for the amount of stuff on sale. I recall it got shut down one day with a Marshall’s seizure notice on the door. Sad that almost all the Italian bakeries have gone leaving a tiny handful. Paris Baguette while a chain has better pastries than the old bakery. Black Seed Bagel was briefly on the street but closed down during Covid. Shelsky’s filled the gap quite nicely. Again on the south side of Atlantic but again barely. Maybe 50 feet.

There is so much improvement on Atlantic these days in the food scene. There’s now even decent sushi off Atlantic with Mikado and Hibino. French bistro at Chez Moi. Upscale American at Colonie. More wine bars and trendy night spots than ever. The Long Island Bar & Restaurant even reopened. Food there is better than you would ever hope. I think that Atlantic and even Court above Atlantic are far better these days than the 90s. Heading east on Atlantic there’s even more to discover. But Court heading south does have more interesting things than Court north of Atlantic. But then the northern part is also far shorter.

Moroccan Star was on Atlantic Ave, between Court & Clinton. A couple of doors from Damascus Bakery. It was very good.
Court St (Bklyn Hts side) wasnt gonna win any awards, then or now. When the porn movie theater was there, Queen had a pizzeria next door, with their restaurant next to that. Both were great but they only re-opened the restaurant on the next block when their block was razed for the new multiplex & the B&N bookstore. Oriol’s rotisserie chicken was good & there was an above average Spanish place that was ok on that block as well. Otherwise, from Montegue to Atlantic was dead or bars geared toward the courts, politicians & Bklyn Law School (O’Keefe’s Bar).
