The only Korean-Uzbek that I knew in Brighton Beach ( “Cafe At Your Mother in Law”) has been closed for a few years

That restaurant also went by the name of Elza Fancy Food, and later Eddie Fancy Food. Under that latter name, their smaller location is still open at 8611 19th Ave., on the border of Bath Beach and Bensonhurst. Farther north in Bensonhurst, Cafe Lily, at 42 Ave. O., is large enough for a group.

Is that a hint? (hope so). They had me at blood sausage.
By the way, exactly where is Fortune Supermarket?

I’ve been going to, or passing by, that area of Coney Is. Ave regularly for years, but haven’t really tried any of these restaurants between Prospect Park and Ave H. It appears that George’s Diner, Werkstadt, 773 Lounge and Los Mariachis (last time I went, years ago, there was actually a mariachi band circulating around - and very mediocre food) shouldn’t have been the only places I’ve tried before Ave P or so. Probably should rectify that.

Werkstatt is one of our favorites. Much more eclectic these days than people realize.

Fatima’s Grill makes good shrimp burritos. Chicken over rice at Gyro King Express on Foster

That’s my work hood.

So, where are we going for dinner? Lily? Dunya? Both? We’re here all month.

glad you are feeling up to travelling!
We would love to visit one or more of these and will likely be around most of the month but exact plans are uncertain (may have to go back to ohio to supervise work) - we will be away this Fri-into Wed of next week.

CIA is easy for me, as I can park very close by any of these places.
Any chance for this Tues, Wed or Thurs?
Anyone else? I’m hungry.

Thurs would work best for us, are you thinking lunch or dinner?

Dinner would be better but lunch could work after 1:30pm.

This was at a koryo saram vendor from a 2018 visit to Tashkent’s Chorsu Bazaar.

Enjoy your trip to Uzbekistan!

Along that stretch of CIA I’d be more interested in Urgut Osh Markazi, or another restaurant where I haven’t eaten, than Dunya Kebab House, and I’d sooner be heading home before nightfall. But I can be flexible on Thursday.

Urgut O.M. would be fine by me as well. How about you Jen? Late lunch/early dinner? Anyone else?

I would be good with that choice, definitely. the food pictures (esp of raw kebabs) that Dan provided look great. An early dinner would be good

Thank you. We just landed in Tashkent. It’s 3:30 am so we will have defer exploring for a bit

Jen - I will try to figure out how to do that.

Doug

Jen/Dave: what time would you like to meet at Urgut Osh Markazi on Thursday? How’s 3pm?
Anyone else want to join us? The time is somewhat flexible (obviously) if that’s the issue.

If you can bring along a Russian or Uzbek speaker with you, that will be very helpful. Toni and I found the language barrier at Urgut Osh Markazi the most impenetrable we’ve encountered in the US in many, many years.

We’re probably naive, but we were puzzled and put off by the waiter at Urgut Osh Markazi showing up the minute we sat down and just standing there looking at us while we tried to study the complicated menu. We waved him away, but he returned within less than a minute and did the same thing, just looking at us as we studied the menu. We waved him away again, and this time he took probably a full minute to show back up. It seemed odd to us and it felt like he was rushing us.

Tonight, at our first meal in Tashkent, the waiter did exactly the same thing. So I think that’s just how the Uzbeks do it.

that or a little later would be fine - should we post a note on the usual chat thread perhaps

Фортуна Fortune Supermarket is at 4130 18th Avenue, about a 15-minute walk from Urgut Osh Markazi.
