GOOD EATS NYC 2024 (A Blanket Thread)

Next year, let’s hope.

Yes. sorry, I misunderstood the reference to Atlantic, you are right. I agree on the the rest, and of course all the infill housing in Brooklyn downtown areas (including 4th Avenue, Gowanus, Downtown, Atlantic Yards etc) as well as other attractions here are bringing a lot of new dining establishments catering to a younger crowd. in to the “established” communities where you and I live, thats a totally valid observation.

Cotra - Japanese Izakaya in Gowanus - How is it not packed every night. Terrific meal from start to finish. Good drinks, perfect pacing (a big plus for us), fun menu. Really impressed but half empty on a Saturday at 7. Very easy to reserve.
Addictive Cabbage - True to the name. Yamitsuki (“addictive”) izakaya-style cabbage. Crispy, nicely dressed. It grows on you quickly, and tastes even better with other dishes.
Fried Potatoes - With Bonito Flakes and sweet Okonomi sauce. Pretty good
Mochiko Chicken - Expertly cooked fried chicken with Harissa Mayo. Light batter, supremely tender, juicy.
Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice - Solid. Could have used a better tuna/rice ratio but plenty of flavor.
Yakiniku Ribeye Steak - Perfectly cooked, well marbled with Miso Scallion Butter (a bit chunky but fine)

Fairly priced. $150 for 2 including tip/tax. Apparently we just made it to Happy hour (Sat night!) so much of the food and drinks were at a discount. I hope they’ll stick around

we ate at palace dumpling at 27 division st. today, ten-minute wait at 11am on a sunday(!), no carts, they brought each dish as it was ready so the dim sum arrived hot and fresh to our table probably my new favorite dim sum in manhattan. Five people ate very well for $100.

Highlights were the chicken feet, which had a nice amount of spicy heat, shrimp dumplings, the wrapped sticky rice had hunks of good chinese sausage and the eggplant stuffed with shrimp still had a crispy exterior.

best,

Dim Sum Palace, I take it. Thanks for the good word!

yes, good catch!

I’ve been to the Dim Sum Palace on W 56 and the one on W 46 a few l times.

The first couple of experiences were good, the last time everything seemed just a bit less-than, which made me wonder about how much who’s in the kitchen at one of these chains might matter.

(I’m assuming they are bulk-making most of the dim sum items that can be for consistency.)

That church was where my high school graduation was held.

It would be interesting to know if they use a central commissary. A couple of them had a half price dim sum happy hour from 3-5pm, not sure if that’s still happening.

To my eye, the restaurant on division has not been discovered yet by the young, media set. Otoh, maybe the city is empty right now.

Best,

Had a great meal at Quique Crudo by the team from Cosme. Great, fresh, interesting aguachiles and ceviches, and a sophisticated yet fun cocktail program. No reservations and a very small space with only bar seating.

Friendly and crisp, professional service. Just an overall lovely vibe. Can’t wait to go back and try the lobster ceviche.

Cafe Hong Kong, Shu Jiao Fu Zhou, and Bo Ky write-ups over on the Chinatown thread:

Excellent meal at Theodora last night, a mostly-fish, mostly-grilled place from the same owners as Miss Ada’s. Too dark for decent pix, but I did the best I could. There are many bread / dip combos on the menu - this was the Za’atar Kubaneh.

A number of crudos, also. We had the Hiramasa and the Ora King Salmon.

I wasn’t as keen on the Tomato Salad, which promised sardines and didn’t really deliver in enough bulk.

Octopus and Black Cod were also standouts.

And I don’t see this listed on the menu, but it’s probably Eggplant.

We had a lot more that I didn’t photograph, or photographed so badly that I’m embarrassed to upload it, notably a Whole Trout, which was a little too smoky, and the Sourdough with Riccotta. There’s also a stellar martini made with tomato water and basil oil, which is similar to something I make at home when I save up enough tomato water.

Comp disclosure: a shot with the bartender, and two after dinner drinks. In addition to the drinks I paid for, I’m a little shocked I made it home in one piece.

All of that looks amazing. I am a sucker for kubaneh – and those dips look lovely.

I would 100% be up for a group dinner there.

Looks great, the crudi in particular! Might have to visit Brooklyn — how expensive is it?

Medium. https://www.theodoranyc.com/menu

In the not-so-distant past, a $40 entree would shock me. But here we are.

Yeah, I remember a trip to Turks & Caicos. Most mains started in the mid-40s, so when we would find one in the 30s we thought it was a good deal :scream:

This was 2009.
