I think it’s Sofreh Cafe

Me neither
Samsa by any other name (i could swear there’s a Seinfeld episode that covers this)
except its a different pastry from samsa - sort of a rich milk yeast dough, it seems.
I really really wanted to try that but I was super, super stuffed. Next time!
So glad you enjoyed the cafe.
New place opened up on Montague a few months ago
For any who used to frequent a certain place in the meat packing district before all the fancy clubs and suburbanites appeared, there’s a homage going on here.
Very competently prepared diner classics on a short menu with a few cheffy additions. The dessert list is long. As the waitress was reciting the options I stopped her when she said sour cherry pie. I’m not normally big on desserts. But sour cherry pie maybe my all time favorite.
I only have an after shot. Amazing.
The interior is hauntingly familiar to that old meat packing spot. Not surprising when you get a diner that was designed by movie people. If only they would add duck liver mousse to the starters I might think I’ve died and gone to heaven. If heaven was in Brooklyn.
Are you referring to Florent?
Ding ding ding
If you remember the old window upfront looking through the red neon sign through the shades up at the light. It was eerily familiar.
Life altering “I cant believe its not pancakes” Oatmeal griddle cakes at Breakfast by Salt’s Cure. Its infused with just enough cinnamon molasses syrup so no syrup necessary (nor allowed). After seeing the lines at the West Village location for the past 6 months we figured it was time. At 9 am it was a 15 min wait, but by 10:15 or so over 30 . Really good stuff
Guess who has a branch in Manhattan now. Utopia Bagels, that’s who. It’s at the corner of 34th and Lex, there was a wait but not enough of one to enrage me, and I very much enjoyed this “Worth It,” i.e. an everything bagel with cc, lox, onion, tomato and capers. I even got a seat!
that looks hearty! and how much was it worth?
With 18% tip, almost $20, which I guess is the going rate for takeout? I’m going to Odeon on Sunday - theirs is $28 pre-tax & tip.
But how was the bagel itself?
Good, but a bit too squishy and sweet. I prefer a tougher crust and a chewier crumb. Of course, that probably would have resulted in even more of the filling leaching out, since it would have been harder to bite through. I will say that the fillings were great, and the sandwich was very well-constructed. And well-wrapped, as you can see.
I used to love the lamb sandwich at the Odeon, would you mind taking a look see to see if they still have it?
On a completely unrelated note, the Odeon holds a special place in my heart, I had one of the best business meetings of my life there and when I was done negotiating, excused myself, walked outside, screamed at the top of my lungs, walked back and finished lunch
I don’t see it.
I feel like Odeon has been in my life forever. I forget about it for years, and then I suddenly end up there for one reason or another.
I was just at Odeon. Wife works around the corner from it. Never recall seeing a lamb sandwich.
Anyone else remember this great divvy sort of bar restaurant called Yaffa’s in Tribeca? She had an awesome lamb merguez sandwich. That and a slice of tart tatin was a heavenly lunch.
I remember Yaffa Cafe on St. Marks - this was different?
