Fried chicken chains

Yes, but not fried is it? I do love piri piri chicken!

We’re just finishing up our lunch at the Kettner Blvd, San Diego location of The Crack Shack. Fried chicken oysters and slaw for me. Fire bird chicken sandwich for him. We split the mini biscuits with miso butter. They have free refills on the soda and a bar for self serve sauces (I got BBQ, Sriracha 1000 Island, and pineapple mustard to try). All delicious and now we will stagger over to the comic book convention. I will try not to nap at a quiet panel

Are there still panels scheduled for today, July 28?

There are several freestanding Church’s in Toronto now. I haven’t tried it yet

Yes. I think there a Steve Ditko one we may go to. There’s a web site with the panel schedule if you Google!

Cool. Enjoy!

Cosplay for you? Going as your favorite pizza, perhaps?

Nah. I’m just a civilian shuffle stepping among the crush of humanity on the convention floor like I am trying to avoid attracting a sandworm. Got some art, talked with some comic book folks we like, hung out with a friend from LA that drove down. It’s been a great, if exhausting time!

I remember when Comic Con used to be actually about comic books.

I got my The Dark Knight Returns autographed by Frank Miller there.

I totally get it. You can still do comic book related stuff these days, but it hides in pockets.

There was a booth there dedicated to Frank Miller stuff this year. It was tucked in down by the videogames and across from Alex Pardee. Frank was not there.

It shouldn’t be. Peri-peri chicken is grilled.

I really wish we had Nando’s out here, but Port of Peri-Peri (several locations in the Peninsula & East Bay) fills in the gap well enough.

Frank was not there.

These days, count that as a blessing.

There’s been some recent articles that he’s in recovery from alcohol abuse. I wish him well in that effort.

I didn’t have anywhere else to put the mention and I didn’t want it to get lost.
Thanks for telling me about the chicken. I’ve never had it before.

That can explain some things, but not his decent into(no pun intended) batshit insane racism post 9-11, never mind a career full of the most horrendous female characters.

I loved Miller as a high-schooler, when he was writing Daredevil and Wolverine and Dark Knight. And all of that seems amazing and cool to a teenager. And even to the 20-something artist whose job it is to channel their inner teenager. But that gave way to the 30’s and Sin City and what we THOUGHT was over the top parody, but it turns out, nope, he MEANT it.

And I’m super disappointed because at his peak, he had the same flare that made Dashell Hammett books classics. Now he’s just another cranky, bitter old fart.

Maybe getting sober will reform him a bit. I hope so.

My grandmother always said that what’s in you when you’re sober comes out when you’re drunk.

So maybe sober he won’t say what he thinks, but chances are he’ll still think it.

This. Our posse enjoys the occasional drink, but not one of them ever becomes mean or angry. More like giggly or sleepy.

Booze just brings out the inner asshole in, well, assholes in disguise

Honestly, we all have inappropriate, ungenerous thoughts. We’ve all snickered inwardly at the joke made in poor taste or mean-spiritedness. Recognizing those thoughts as inappropriate and unworthy of being repeated outside one’s own skull is the mark of someone who ant least understands the basic social contract of ‘Don’t be an asshole.’

I’m inclined to allow that someone’s true interior is in reality unknowable and 99% of the time, irrelevant. Someone who acts like a saint while thinking vile thoughts does no less good in the world than someone else who acts identically but is morally ‘pure’.

If you find you like Port of Peri-Peri, then seek out Nando’s if you’re in Chicago or the DC/Baltimore area. They’re South African-based and have achieved great success in the UK too.

I had Nando’s in London. I loved it.

You can find it on Amazon. I’m on the Southern Oregon coast, I bought mine at Grocery Outlet. I think Safeway carries it, the one in Crescent City has it.
