The old sewing store in Davis across from Mike’s has paper in the windows and “Coming soon Oath artisan pizza.” I suppose another pizza place could be useful, if one doesn’t like Mike’s and Christo’s and gets tired of Flatbread’s scene.
DePasquale’s At Night Caps Corner (Newton, near Waltham line) finally opened. Have not made it over yet.
Oath is interesting – they’re a new local wannabe-chain that’s growing fast. They’re basically the Chipotle of pizza: you pick your ingredients, they assemble a personal size pizza, and it cooks up in 90 seconds. Friends of mine have tried them at South Station and been really impressed by the quality and price.
It may already have been mentioned that the space which formerly housed the Westford Market Basket is being remodeled as a Whole Foods.
Oh, I saw that. I’m looking forward to giving them a try soon. I’m sure the sausage sandwiches are terrific, and the porchetta/rabe sounds worth a try. They also make their pasta in-house.
Sugidama, a new Japanese place serving house-made soba (hot and cold) and itsakaya-grilled meats, just opened in Davis Square.
Eater reports that the Winter Hill Brewing Company just opened its cafe today, serving Counter Culture coffee and sandwiches. The brewery part hasn’t opened yet.
According to Eater Boston, Waban Kitchen in Newton MA has closed.
There are a lot of closures and moves this week among the Harvard Square restaurants formerly located in the Smith nee Holyoke Center? The building is beginning several years of renovations and all of the current businesses have to move. It’s not clear if the moves are temporary or permanent. Harvard has announced there will be a similar # of eating options when the center is finished, but there are no commitments to current tenants.
Clover is closing today and will soon be moving into the former Yenching space on Mass Ave (also owned by Harvard). While smaller, the space is a much better location. Buildout is progressing quickly.
Oggi has relocated to part of the former Finale space at the south end of the building. They said they hope to stay in that space, but are unsure.
B.Good closed a few days ago and it sounds as if they are still looking for space, but preparing to move on from HSQ for now. This will be a loss for the neighborhood.
Al’s has closed, however there is no sign on the window and I have heard nothing of if they will relocate or close permanently. When I was looking for a sign on the empty window, several students walked by and remarked what a bummer it is. Al’s was a good source for cheap eats for the students and community.
Au Bon Pain closes today with no word if they will reopen. ABP is pretty mediocre to begin with and they have another location down Mass Ave on the outskirts of the square. However they were a landmark right in the heart of the square for 3+ decades, and the convenience of their 1a closing time can’t be denied.
The closings definitely create a gap for quick lunch options in the square. Places like Boloco, Pinocchios, Market in the Square and others should temporarily benefit. Sweetgreen (JFK Street) and Tatte (Mass Ave / old Panera space) will crush it when they open later this year.
I just met with someone who walked through earlier this afternoon and Al himself was in front of Al’s Deli greeting customers who he had to turn away. His general message was ‘sorry folks, blame Harvard not me, I had a 10 year lease’. The truth always lies somewhere in between and Harvard has a reputation for not being the most gracious landlord, but Al may have not read the fine print.
The restaurant that replaced The Upper Crust in Watertown appears to have opened. Was driving by, so didn’t happen to catch the name.
It’s J. Dee Asian Bistro http://www.jdeeasianbistro.com/
Dosa n’ Curry on Somerville Avenue just outside Union Square in Somerville has re-opened.
I’ve been trying to track down their menu since they opened. Where did you find it?
