I finally got around to trying this place a few days ago (mostly because I didn’t realize Doma was reservation-only). Basically there’s some promise there, but I don’t think the execution is good enough, and the service was very uneven. At the end of the day, while $75 for a 4 course meal is pretty reasonable these days, I’d rather go to Mijote or Heirloom Cafe (or the old Hillside Supper Club, for that matter) if I’m looking for something in that style and price range.
Bread - pretty nice, same as above.
Beets, cherries, peas, yogurt, hazelnuts, banyuls - the bones of a good dish, overwhelmed by too many hazelnuts, I think. I would have preferred half as many hazelnuts, possibly smashed up a little. I’m not the biggest hazelnut fan to begin with, though. A little hard to eat in the bowl they serve it in.
Fungi soup, (pickled? maybe just less ripe?) strawberries, nasturtium oil - I actually liked this, but the soup was pretty thick and somewhat grainy in texture. Sort of felt like a thinner hummus in consistency. Nasturtium oil was very visible, but I can’t say I tasted much of it. Small sourish strawberry pieces were a nice contrast to the soup.
Pork collar, ramp, morels, polenta, more beets - somewhat overcooked.
Pound cake, meringue, strawberries - fine, but I like that kind of thing regardless. All the other courses had options, but this was the only dessert. There was also an option of a cheese course.
There’s enough there that I wouldn’t mind going again and trying some other dishes, I just don’t really expect it to ever be my first choice, given all the other options around.
