Fair Food

I did the county fair in Northern California a bunch when my kid was small. The best possible food was almost always some variation of ‘meat on a stick’. I’m not a corndog person, but beef and chicken skewers of various sorts were always welcome. grilled, fried, teriyaki, garlic sauce, whatever.

It’s also the only place I’ve ever had a deep-fried Snickers. I mean, I get it. Melty chocolate in a crunchy shell. But not an experience I’ll ever go out of my way for.

It was like 10" X 8" dark wood with black metal glued to it.

I know its in a box (maybe up in the attic) – just another chapter in my life of questionable decisions (LOL).

Nope – not the plague, although I didn’t feel so good after eating 7 Corn Dogs.

Not really a big fan of fair food, unless it’s a fair dedicated to a particular type of food. The food at the tomatofest that I went to in Carmel 25 years ago was lovely. Most of the time though I find fair food looks and smell better than it tastes. But put me in the camp of corn dog fan, I also like the deep fried zucchini sticks with a side of creamy dressing for dipping.

Be my guest!

We used to enjoy watching Carnival Eats on tv. Some of the items were truly insane - nothing I could ever imagine eating.

My family would go to the Kutztown Fair (RIP) every couple of years. For me, the high point was the Amish meal tent: family style, all-you-can-eat plates of ham, chicken and dumplings, relishes, etc. Plus there were tables selling homemade bread and other baked goods, like shoo-fly pie.

We went to the Kutztown fair when I was about eight years old. All I remember is the demonstration hanging. They hanged a (female) dummy for some awful crime. The Fair isn’t RIP, according to their website. A friend went a couple of years ago and yes, they still did the hanging (though it’s not on the list of this year’s events).

One of my favorite local Instagram “influencers”, The Snack Sensei, visits the California State Fair.

His other videos are fun.

I remember the hanging! There was a mock wedding and a barn raising too.
I thought it wasn’t happening because they ran out of money, but I’m very glad to know that’s not the case.

Yes! The Duchess County fair has GREAT food! It’s been a number of years since I’ve gotten to go sadly, but I remember being blown away by the pierogies, too!

I used to go to the Maryland Renn Fest and have one of those gristly turkey legs for the heck of it. Tasted ok but not great.
The oyster shooters were surprisingly good at the last Fest i went to. As were the dry ciders.

In recent years there are so many better options…especially now that those turkey legs start at $15!

Yeah, generally have not been to a county/local fair since I was a kid, and I don’t eat much there except for the fried doughs (maybe an occasional hot dog if I’m really hungry). However - food fests and food fairs. Yeah, those are more my style.

I remember when Island Creek Oysters started up an annual fundraising fest and we went in the early years. Tickets were relatively cheap then (this was about 15 yrs ago) - $50 bucks admission gave you 4 tickets that could be traded in for an alcoholic drink or half a dozen oysters. I don’t drink, so I had 2 dozens raw oysters, and they were so good. :yum:

In the end, I don’t think there is anything I like better on a hot summer day than corn on the cob at a county fair.

Fond childhood memories of the giant cream puffs at the Wisconsin State Fair.

Been there many times. OC White’s ribs are my fondest memory.

I’d like them better if they weren’t overcooked!

Often the problem if product doesn’t move. I’d rather they pull them and wrap them. Better cooled ribs than overcooked and dry.

I mean’t the corn, sorry.

One would think, at a fair like that, they’d just load coolers with corn and dump some boiling, salty water of the ears. Then you could grill to finish them off. No reason to cook the life out of sweet corn. My thing is, I love it raw. Great sweet corn is great raw. Still, I like getting an ear dipped in butter occasionally. Nostalgia.
