Diners and Greasy Spoons in the [Greater Toronto Area]

I have to give it a try. Thanks.

Should add they run a nice curbside patio, currently closed for the season but I expect will open up in May.

Good to know, thank you! I just followed George St Diner on IG.

The breakfasts look great.

I really miss the senator’s lunches ( when they were much cheaper). Very close to my office, and they had the best grilled cheeses!

The 3 places I used to get grilled cheese were Lox Stock and Bagel (on challah), the Fran’s on St Clair and Shanghai Cowgirl!

Just wanted to point out that Burger Shack (in both PedroPero and My Top 10 list of 2023) charges $9.70 for their bacon & eggs (2) with home fries and toast.

I’ve dined at most of the diners mentioned that are located in Toronto. I wish the Globe had done a list of 50 or 100 diners across Canada, to include more in places like Kingston, Hamilton and London, and other small and mid-sized cities outside the big cities.

Can’t see it because I don’t subscribe. Any ā€œguest passesā€ lying around??

GTA listed diners:

  • White Lily
  • Patrician Grill
  • The Senator
  • Creme de la Creme Cafe
  • The Broadview Diner
  • Orchard Family Restaurant (Mississauga)

They missed Rosemary and Thyme in Scarborough.

I don’t subscribe.

Basically
Listed first
The White Lily
Then
The Patrician
The Senator
Broadway Diner
Creme de la Creme ( I think)

Out of Toronto places still standing, they left out Good Bite, Avenue Diner and Ari’s Place, and I don’t think any Scarborough places were mentioned.

The outside Toronto in Ontario list was very light. The outside Ontario and outside Quebec list was even lighter.

Oops, thanks @wanderingfoodie

It’s a national list with only 32 spots.

The list is already way too Toronto heavy.

But it is a reader poll of some sort, so I guess that’s who buys the Globe and votes in these things.

Now the Sun should do a Diner List, to capture more of the diners easy of the Don Valley.

Good Bite doesn’t belong on any list anymore, it’s a joke now.

The Senator’s food is not very good anymore. Looks nice inside.

I haven’t been to Good Bite much in the past 5 years. Maybe once since 2020.

I have heard good things about Donlands Diner and Broadview Diner. I used to eat at the Detroit Eatery and Motorama a couple times a month. Now I visit East York once every 3 months and not for breakfast.

Don’t bother. And I can’t believe that they went to Mississauga but not Scarborough, some really good greasy spoons/diners there. No wonder I don’t subscribe

Has anyone ever tried Vesta Lunch? It sure looks like a typical greasy spoon diner.

Vesta was terrible the last time I visited. Really greasy, old oil.

The souvlaki was almost inedible.

It clearly wasn’t made by anyone who knew a little about souvlaki or tzatziki.

Plenty of formerly Greek diners are being run by non - Greeks who make a decent souvlaki and tzatziki. It isn’t rocket science.

Vesta was good in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I used to go there after parties.

Avenue Diner at Davenport Rd and Avenue Road has the old diner atmosphere. It serves a good breakfast. It’s still being run by Macedonian Canadians. My friend’s brother owns it.

A little too greasy for me . Heard too many horror stories.

I’ve been to Vesta several times over the years. It’s changed hands somewhat frequently.
I switched to People’s (couple of blocks east) for my regular fix - until it went under and Anthony Rose took it over. Went back to Vesta - once - it had gone downhill - the Eastern European owners (?Romanian) had gone and I eventually ended up at Burger Shack on Eglinton (via Good Bite and Avenue - again both deteriorated). Not sure what exactly defines a ā€˜diner’ - but I’m still at Burger Shack - was there this morning!
