Crimes against coffee

From the article:

Batch-brewed filter coffee is sweetened with a dark sugar syrup, pure cream is aerated in a Thermomix, and orange zest is freshly grated over the top, so the beverage hits the table with a fragrant citrus haze

Not gonna lie, that sounds pretty delicious. I could see myself ordering one as dessert if I wanted something a bit sweet but was too full for a piece of cake.
Caffe Dante in NYC, back when it was a coffeehouse, made a similar drink. Espresso poured over a slice of orange, topped with fresh whipped cream and a few chocolate shavings. The coffee and orange complemented each other and there was nothing artificial about it.

Anyone know why you wouldn’t just steam it?

I have a shipment of oranges coming in from Florida later today. I will try this pairing in the morning! Thanks for mentioning it.

my cousin loves an orange mocha enhanced latte. it was the first fancy latte I tried, 25 years ago.

I am now forgetting if it was made at Peet’s coffee shop or an indie roaster.

I have just committed a crime again coffee - for Science!

I guess I took one for the team. All my talk about Maxwell House coffee and my childhood made me wonder is Maxwell House like I remember it or is it awful? So I got some.

I usually drink Illy. Usually do a pour over these days b/c I need to limit just about everything :face_with_symbols_on_mouth:

Maxwell House .. Aroma like I remember? Nope.. Taste like I remember? Double nope! Bitter, stinky. I’m no snob about a plain cup of coffee, but this went right down the drain. I’d rather drink an instant sachet. I am heartbroken. Just maybe(?) it was better quality coffee then. I will now repair to a darkened room and sob in silence.

I believe it was. My grandma was a Chock Full O’Nuts devotee. Sadly, it is not the same as I remember it either. Maybe that’s why in her later years she drank more espresso from the moka pot.

Not 100% sure, but I think the texture would be different. And the Thermomix could be set to a lower temp.
Plus, OOOH LOOK A FANCY GADGET!!! /s

We were a Chock Full o’Nuts household. It hasn’t been sold in Canada for around 30 years. Folgers and Nabob have been our regular grocery store coffees for the past 30 years.

I started mostly buying locally roasted coffee 5 years ago.

Chock Full o’Nuts used to be my favorite and then it became impossible to find. My Freddy/Kroger has it, but not decaf which is what I drink now. I’ve also had Nabob, it must have been purchased on one of our many trips to BC. I have a vague memory of liking it.

Super popular in Japan. The one you has is UCC, a Japanese brand.I think they are called coffee bags, like tea bags. And yes some are very good.

Now that you point it out, I see the UCC way at the top. It was surprisingly good. The housekeeper did not resupply mine as I used them, or I would have taken as many as possible when I left the We Hotel.
I am using Ristora instant coffee flakes in Rome, now. They are not as good, but for my taste they seem a bit better than Nescafe Red. They are big flakes and when I use them with 4/5 the recommended amount of boiling water, the coffee tastes fairly decent. Well, strong, at least.

I should have taken a picture of the “brewed” coffee but i already drank it.

It is 0600 here in Rome. I found out last night that Pope Leo is coming to the Basilica across the street from my hotel to say Mass. So i am off to stand in the crowd to welcome him.
Kind of silly thing for a lapsed Catholic to do but it seems to be a good idea.
