Crimes against coffee

Back to my complaining about my newest Illy coffee delivery.
Can you guess which espresso is the new one? :wink:

And the flavor is as flat as the crema. Or lack thereof.

This is my old Illy and it tastes pretty good. Not as good as a professional barista would pull, but better than most coffees I make at home. That is pretty stark difference. The one w the crema is my last good capsule.

Mettbrötchen = seasoned raw ground pork with onions.

You can skip the Halve Hahn — it’s just rye bread with gouda, paprika, onion.

Himmel & Ääd is a must, however = fried blood sausage with apple sauce, usually served with mashed.

That one on top looks so sad. Definitely seems like you received some fake goods. Have you considered moving to a “real” espresso machine? There are a number of very decent and fairly inexpensive ones on the market at this point. (E.g. Breville Bambino)

Adam, my Illy Millenium was a gift from an ex-GF that I have hung onto even though it is getting older and less reliable.

Sentimental value, I guess.
But I may end up doing as you advise and move onto a real espresso machine in time. And the Breville Bambino will be one I look at first. Thank you!

Hmm… “Just” $250 on sale. Not terrible. A grinder would set me back $60 to $100 or so…

This is a conversation I had with a few friends. DEFINITELY would consider these as Crimes Against Coffee!!

I would also suggest considering the Gevi espresso machine and grinder. (The Casabrews brand looks to be identical.) A friend of mine bought these last year for about $190, and I spent a little time playing around with them. (She actually bought a “package deal” like this one, since she had none of the peripheral equipment.) The combination made surprisingly good espresso. And it looks like it’s switchable to pods if you want that.

OMG. That reminds me of a story. My PIC and I used to visit his college buddy in NYC all the time, crashing at his pad. He’d been a bachelor for most of his life & had the strangest habits.

One visit he insisted that the coffee he’d discovered was so flavorful and strong that he would simply top the old coffee grounds with new coffee grounds & only empty it when it was full :nauseated_face:

My PIC forgot about it in the morning and poured himself the worst cuppa in his life. By the time the freshly brewed coffee had sunk through the days worth of grounds it was cold and disgusting.

Oh, the stories we could tell about Dave :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

German coffee is so good.

I like to seek out the historic coffee houses in the German cities that have them.

I do the same thing in the UK.
But when i went to Lloyd’s of London they threw me out with a warning to not come back.

I always find it the weak part of Kaffee & Kuchen. Knowing how close great coffee culture is with Italy and the many Italian immigrants over the last 50 years I am always surprised how little high quality coffee is important in Germany

I like Italian coffee, too!

maybe I liked the German coffee because I’ve mostly ordered it in the Italy of Germany. (haha)

My cousins that live just outside Munich also happen to be half Sicilian, and their dad imported Italian foods, so it’s possible I lucked out with better than average coffee. That said, I really do like the coffee at Café Luitpold and at Dallmayr in Munich.

No experience in Frankfurt.

I think the coffee in the Netherlands is far superior to German coffee.

A couple years ago I had a job that took me to Denmark every few months. The route was US via United to Germany (typically Frankfurt), then Germany to Denmark via Lufthansa. The highlight of the entire trip was the coffee on the Lufthansa Euro leg. They served a cup of piping-hot water and a sachet of Turkish grind Dallmayr. The cup’s lid had a fine mesh covering over the opening to keep the grinds in the cup. It wasn’t complimentary (€3), but it was extremely welcomed after 10-12 hrs of travel. It was never available on the return Lufthansa Germany-to-US flight, unfortunately.
