costco yay/nay/meh

I think we have a few packets of soy sauce, hot sauce, honey and ketchup from decades ago. Maybe they’ll work. I wouldn’t use them, but the roomate has a cadt iron stomach and constitution and always picks up a large handful, just in case, you know!

Costco’s holiday offerings include 8 kg Serrano hams in the bone for $113.

I’ve been so tempted by those in the past! But no.

I save those condiment packets for camping. I save them in a plastic take away container and throw it in the pile of food gear. Often don’t use them but there’s been several times when it really helped. Tapitio packets help tuna in a can. Packets usually average 2 years. In an emergency kit, it would have to last like 10.

Get a lot of snowstorms there in Lodi?

No, but I work periodically in snow country and have gotten close to be snowed in more than once.

It’s that time of year where the Kirkland 2 pack of parchment paper is on sale! I had opened my last package so the supply shelf has been restocked

Yeah, but it’s the rolls. I prefer sheets. I’m not good at tearing straight, and I hate curled ends/edges!

I don’t understand why the ripping blade in that parchment paper never works properly. I have to start the rip by hand, then line it up with the blade. For the curl, I turn it upside down and smooth it out.

On my current box of parchment paper, the blade peeled off part of the way. I just took it off completely and am now using scissors to cut pieces off. I may need to invest in King Arthur’s precut sheets.

Yes, it’s too frustrating. I don’t care if the sheets cost more … some things are just worth it to me.

I also find it’s easier to store the sheets. They come in a flat box that fits flat in a drawer where we store extra placemats, so the sheets are pretty easy to access when needed. The drawer where we’d store a roll is already full of other rolls and similarly shaped boxes (plastic wrap, waxed paper, two size of foil, zip bags, etc).

I have a deep box on its side in a pantry closet that holds all my rolls (except the plastic wrap that is alway sitting out for use. I find that easier than using up a drawer for the rolls especially the bigger ones. It doesnt bother me that the parchment tears a bit, I usually have taken off too big a piece anyway so I fold the torn bit under.

I like these too. But I literally just found out that thawing them as is in the vacuum sealed packages is a no-no.

Why? That’s how I thaw them all the time.

Plus one for parchment sheets. I buy these on Amazon. 200 sheets per box. One small fold at the end and they fit perfectly in my toaster oven pan. The only drawback I’ve found is they can get close to burning under the broiler setting.

Agree, this is one convenience I am willing to pay extra for!
One time, in a moment of kitchen prep insanity, I did tear off two rolls of Costco parchment paper into appropriate sheets for my sheet pans, planning on flattening them out in a flat drawer. What a freakin’ disaster. Never, ever, again.

Botulism. Without the needed oxygen it increases the chances.

Isn’t everybody thawing them in the fridge ?

According to the article, thawing in the vacuum package in the fridge is fine. And that’s what I do.
