costco yay/nay/meh

Defrost in the fridge. We did this with parm from Italy during the pandemic and after. Haven’t tried with costco parm, but no reason it shouldn’t work. (Have you price checked TJ’s for smaller packaging vs price?)

When we lived in NYC, there was a Costco about a 20-minute walk from us. We couldn’t buy much at a time (no car), but what we saved on vitamins and other commonly used meds (like Advil) made the membership totally worth it.

We have the Costco branded credit card and use it for everything, so we get a whole lot of money back every February. We could totally splurge on fancy meat and seafood, but unfortunately we don’t have the freezer space (and no room in the garage for a standalone freezer).

Yep…can’t wait to take my Christmas in February Costco trip.

TJ’s romano is about the same price as Costco, but I’m trying to pare back my patronage there. Too many ugly stories.

I was going to use my dividend from Costco on a prime rib for Christmas or New Year’s this past December. The meat prices were way out of my comfort range, even as a treat. So I used it for gift cards.

I wrapped a chunk of romano in Press-n-Seal and put it in the freezer. I’ll report back.

This comparison is very misleading in a macro view. Selection of foodstuffs at Costco is minuscule in comparison to Walmart.

What didn’t you like about the tires?

They did not inspire confidence. It seemed like I was driving on a slippery surface all the time. I described it to the tire shop manager as “greasy”.

I save enough in the price of my daily wear contact lenses to make the membership worth it. Plus, I’d do it anyway. I like how they run their business. And I have bought groceries on occasion. Meat, seafood and cheese especially.

Too bad you have to buy them in bulk…

Perfect for the person with six ears, though!

I tried these today too - not bad at all for frozen xiao long bao. The wrapper got a little rubbery as they cooled off but the filling was tasty. Not as much soup inside as I’d like, but probably as much as could be hoped for given that they are quite small (about the size of a ping pong ball). I’d buy them again.

There were POG samples today. She was very popular

Despite my children’s best efforts we did not get any.

My experience too. The amount of goods they load up in those lines, it’s certainly for families. And given the number of Asian shoppers I see there (we do love our Costco), it makes sense as many Asian households are multi-generational. There are also Business Center locations - though none by me - so small business owners have additional options.

I’m one of the singletons, but I vacuum seal what I can’t use quickly (steaks working particularly well). It’s one of the reasons why my freezers are 90% full year-round. :smiling_face_with_tear: With fish or bigger cuts of meat, I used to share with my parents, and now sisters and their families. There are some things that make no sense for me to buy – looking at your giant tub of parmesan cheese - but I make it work. The key things for me though are the pantry items that I can really buy in bulk - the organic cane sugar, the cooking oils/sprays, the chicken stock, garbage bags, and yeah…the good ol’ TP and paper towels.

I make my yearly membership fee back on the savings on half-and-half alone. Land o’ Lakes H&H is about $5/qt at my local stores, as opposed to $2.19 at Costco. We go through about 3-4 quarts a month in coffee/baking/cooking, so the savings really adds up ($3x40 quarts per year is $120). Not to mention the savings on Kerrygold butter!

Speaking of Costco Business Centers, you can get a whole frozen goat.

Yesterday the line at Costo for returns was out-the-door-and-around-the-corner long. It didn’t occur to me until later, but I wonder if there were a lot of people returning TVs after their Super Bowl parties.

In Hluhluwe (South Africa) we went to a store not aimed at tourists (Boxer Superstore):

They also had offal, but I figured taking a picture of the ox head was tourist enough.
