Coming to Boston/Brookline area for a week with family

North End: again, Galleria Umberto for pizza slices.

Is it just me, or was this one of the longest, strangest threads to show up on HO? If it was just me then I’ll quietly go away…

Out both times I went by

Nah I’m a weird dude. No not really. Part of it was asking for recs and the other half was me bitching about how plans keep changing and then having to be relegated to not what I wanted or not getting to try the recommendations

I want to say thank you for all the input. Hopefully next time I come to the area, I’ll plan and stick to my own guns.

Dang.

We get it. All the best. We are celebrating an anniversary soon. We are opting for the simple and at home. A food truck serving burgers to about fifty at our church. Juggling more than that quickly becomes a hassle, and I find Boston a very hard town to navigate for food.

We have some of the same issues when my family travels. I’ve found that double-checking open times and menus helps minimize “issues,” stress, last-minute changes for us because young adult son has a limited number of strong food preferences and the older adult male hates to spend money (even after agreeing to) yet eats a lot. So sometimes I get a meal alone and let the two of them figure theirs out.

I hope your future travels wherever they take you bring you more satisfaction!

It sounded like there might have been a little communications gap. Planning every meal for a trip is tough, and sticking to it is even tougher. When my wife and I travel with our children, if it’s a five-day trip we usually try to book maybe one or two “nice” dinners, make a stretch goal to hit one or two interesting places for lunch, and everything else is wide open. My wife and kids are not nearly as into food as I am so I do the research and I make sure to get their buy-in and share menus, etc, upfront, so we have no questions later. (And also so that we can all bring the correct outfits if needed.)

Once planned, since we don’t actually plan much, we can structure around those couple of fixed goals, and while we’re moving about I check to see if we’re near the stretch places and we’ll do a detour. If the nice places have menus that are too challenging or the kids are getting fussy for whatever reason, we’ll get them a late lunch first and they can just have a starter or dessert at the restaurant. And I’m sure people will judge me, but in these scenarios – and only these scenarios – I’ll let the kids quietly hang out on their phones. (As long as we’re not seated in the middle of the dining room.) You do what you need to do to enjoy yourself at least a bit on a trip!

I hope you have better luck next time! Low expectations always: My wife and I like to remind ourselves that with young kids it’s no longer “vacation.” It’s now “trip with the kids.” And there is a clear light at the end of the tunnel, a bit of patience. One day the kids will be grown and you’ll miss all of this fun…maybe?
