Carnegie Deli to close...

Yep. Agree totally. There are more and better delis in LA and South Florida than NYC, where they are dying out.

Sounds like a Larry David script!

Kind like this?

And yes that is Dave Chapelle and Patrick Stewart in the same movie…

Don’t hate the playuh …

Browsing around for Rosh Hashana recipes and i just found this recipe for matzo ball soup:

It sounds really good.

Thanks for the recommendation. Mr Rat is down in that area a lot and never got anything there because of the prices. But it would be worth it for a treat if the matzoh ball soup is all that. I will pester him a little bit.

Maybe 25 years ago I went there for lunch while on a business trip involving a trade show at the Coliseum. I was with two associates and we were seated at the long ‘community’ table that ran down the center. My two associates were seated across from each other and I was across from a stranger. No problem, except when the server said he could take their order but not mine because I was in a different section. Really??

Of course it took another ten minutes for someone to take my order plus the offset serving time. I was born and raised in NYC, so I wasn’t shocked. It gave me ten extra mi used to listen to the counter men cursing at the servers.

Great story, Midlife. I remember wanting to make a citizen’s arrest on a table that was smearing mayonnaise on their corned beef and pastrami sandwiches…

Ha! I went with a friend from Pittsburgh, and, despite my lecture beforehand, she ordered her sandwich with white bread and mayo. The guy sitting next to us leaned over and said, “you’re not from around here, are you?” I shook my head in shame and proceeded to help him and his wife finish a giant piece of chocolate cake, and stole the rest of his meal when he left.

I always preferred Katz’s but this is really a shame:

John, there already is a thread about this subject on the New York City board…

Here it is: Carnegie Deli to close...

Well hurry up before it’s gone.

And don’t forget your Lomotil !

So I see but I thought it had broader appeal than just NYC folks. I’d guess its a $$ issue. Most of those places that have been there for a long time own the building. The real estate just gets too valuable to keep. Especially if the kids don’t want to take over the business.

I think if you scroll up you will see that it was a divorce problem and then the owner wanted to retire, which would mean no kids, kids not interested, or some other type of family dispute.

If you check the website, the franchises will continue after Dec 31, and the company will own the product names and will continue to ship products:

"We appreciate all your heartfelt wishes and your love of the Carnegie Deli. After December 31, 2016, you can continue to purchase Carnegie Deli’s signature products online or visit the Carnegie Deli’s licensed locations (Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Deli Las Vegas at The Mirage Hotel & Casino, Carnegie Deli at The Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, PA and annually at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, Queens). "

As noted above, I expect this will eventually turn into a franchising operation.

The owner owns the building, and I’m inclined to doubt they’ve made plans definite enough to have already leased that space to anyone else.

If sold an on-going business, I doubt it would sell for a “fortune” of any size if the sale didn’t include a long-term lease on (at least vaguely) “reasonable” terms for the current space, with contractual restrictions to prevent the owner from selling the building out from under that lease. Unencumbered, I can only imagine what that property is worth in today’s market. Encumbered as above, it would be worth a great deal less. And the owner is of course free to sell the brand/recipes/etc, separate from the “restaurant qua restaurant”…

What Jewish delis are left in South Florida??

There’s not a single noteworthy delicatessen anywhere in Miami that I’m aware of…

NBC is reporting the Carnegie will shut down after this evening…
