Mitchells is permanently closed, primarily because of the weekend street closure for Vanderbilt Open Streets.
BA XUYEN in [Sunset Park] (8th Ave/41 St) formerly my favorite for its delicious pate, sauces and crispy bread seems to have gone through a phase change (new ownership?) the sandwiches are bigger, blander not so special any more. They have introduced a meatloaf sandwich, so bland. Still very busy. Good things dont last forever. ![]()
Haven’t visited yet but the lonche banados at Macario looks like it might be worth a try!
Finally got back to Wayward Fare with some friends last week, Saturday night they were full, with a good neighborhood mix of families, date night, etc and other “types”. Excellent service we were heading out to a concert (Faure, fantastic) around the block and the staff monitored our time requirments carefully, very serious. Most importantly the food and wine is excellent still, they are still offering the great mezze platter, but our group didnt want that much food (and I had just been out food cruising in Flushing with some Board participants. The menu has switched it up to include more italian dishes. We had gnocchi - the texture was unusually creamy, the vadouvan curry seasoning was perhaps too subtle but the dried mushrooms in the dish were way intense and the overall effect very pleasing,
Excellent branzino too, which was a good fish very well cooked but again laying back too much on the seasoning,
Bread pudding was a large serving, fantastic and our guests loved their pasta and salads. Good wine selection, I liked my glass of Fiano di Avellino very much. If you are by for BAM etc or otherwise in the area a very civilized dinner destination.
We live in Midwood and that’s a local for us. We like to go for the food but also for what seem to us to be physically massive guys just plowing through large amounts of food! It’s impressive. I love anything lamb but also love the katuby with greens. (in reply about Village Cafe on CIA)

we saw guys like that too at the Village Cafe - I want to go back! The location is also unique.
They own the liquor store with the parking lot.
The liquor store always seems to have some interesting E. European wines on sale to take next door.
Dave (or anyone else): any thoughts or experiences at Flaming Grill & Buffet on Tilden off Flatbush? My tennis club is 3 blocks away but I’ve never been.
Its a chain buffet with chinese japanese and american food - but I cant tell you any more than that!
Hope you’ll try it out the buffet for us!
that would indeed be taking one for the team!
I love buffets. I will go with you if I can.
It will probably wait until spring, as my tennis club is closed for the winter. Maybe when FlemSnopes comes back and wants to continue to try every place in Brooklyn?
I’m in.
maybe we should all go to kpot in the meantime. hmm, reminds of something I’ve been wanting to write about…will take a day or two to get the right amount of silliness into the post.
Some of these places have self-serve ice cream machines, the sort that stand there innocently humming. I’ve long dreamed of opening my mouth beneath the spigot and letting someone else operate the lever. (maybe I should ask @ninkat for the meaning of this fantasy but I’m probably better off not knowing). My wife, who serves as the appointed Minister of Preventing Me From Doing Stupid Things, has forbidden this for the duration of our marriage. She claims it’s to preserve my (her?) dignity, though frankly that ship set sail years ago and is currently sinking somewhere well off the coast of Common Sense.
Earlier this year, at our local movie theater in Florida, I encountered a popcorn chute, basically a grain cannon disguised as a snack dispenser. I was studying the flow rate (because a man must have hobbies) when a teenage employee wandered over, wearing the expression of someone who’s about to regret asking a customer if they need help, a look I’ve come to know well.
Naturally, I asked if he’d pull the popcorn trigger while I positioned my mouth beneath the chute as my wife filmed the whole thing for insurance purposes. The kid laughed and seemed game, but as I considered the velocity of the kernels, it became clear that the outcome would be:
- I would choke to death in a way that glib historians would call “avoidable” or
- He would get fired or, most probably
- Both, which would really ruin everyone’s evening.
So I stepped back, dignity and marriage intact or at least no more damaged than usual.
best,
I love buffets too. Count me in.
(Reminds me of the AYCE Korean & Japanese one in Queens someone had linked a review of a while back from youtube - so probably @Dean was the one who linked it.)
best post ive read in a long time. thank you.
