Best New England Ice Cream Shops 2022 | Yankee Magazine

I would agree that Lizzy’s quality isn’t comparable to Honeycomb or some other local creameries. It’s good, though, and consistently so - we’ve never had issues with icy texture, etc. - which isn’t always the case elsewhere.

I think a lot of places get their base from some larger supplier. Somebody had once done a study of this on Chowhound, but unfortunately that information, along with other valuable knowledge, is now lost.

By the way, Red Rover Creamery in Portsmouth, NH, is owned by my cyber friend, a former Chowhound! Very interesting flavors.https://facebook.com/RedRoverCreamery/

I’m a big fan of the various branches of Kimball Farm in the greater Boston area. https://kimballfarm.com/ Homemade ice cream, nice mix of flavors, and absurdly oversized portions (the kiddie is the size of your head). The branches with fried seafood are downright evil.

My family has been doing annual trips out to Old Orchard Beach in Maine during the summer. Hotels there are planted right alongside the sand’s edge, which makes hitting the beach ridiculously easy. We have a soft spot for the Dairy Corner https://www.thedairycorner.com/ which has a gargantuan list of flavors (and the Maine blueberry pie is spectacular).

Agreed - I can’t find some older articles describing that surprisingly many well known ice cream shops all over the country get their ice cream base from a few large producer (e.g. Strauss on the west coast is quite popular) and afterwards add their flavors etc.
In a similar direction many ramen places get their ramen base also from a few large vendors

Here is one of ramen base companies where you can buy many different ramen base powders in multi-kg quantities - just add water and serve)

And here is an article which describes how Bi-Rite, Humphry Slocombe and others use Strauss Ice Cream Base to make their ice cream

And if somebody wants to try it out

Not a big fan of Honeycomb. I found it to have a weird mouthfeel. Also, had a bunch of kids in there after school one day and they were weird about letting them sample flavors. Blah.
