Berlin Eats Summer 2024 (Berlin, Germany)

Overly simplistic? Not sure why … I’m generally based in analogously cosmopolitan cities that either excel in historically regional fare (Tokyo), or borrow from those who built it up (NY/Dubai). Not so familiar with German food, however that may be defined, but it would be good to avail of it while in-country.

Used to be partial of Niederegger and Ritter Sport, until I tried good chocolate. Also might want to get one of those lye-soaked pretzels.

But I will look into the other recommendations, so I appreciate those.

Prater has pretzels! :pretzel:

Check out the chocolate available in the food hall of the KaDeWe department store when you visit. Most other department stores will also have a Food Hall with a chocolate selection, often in the basement.

RitterSport and Neideregger are easy to find everywhere. The department stores will also have other brands of marzipan, besides Neideregger.

Oh, and you need to get some ice cream at HokeyPokey (if you’re near a branch). Fantastic, and def responsible for a few lbs we put on this summer

PS: Niederegger is not meant to be a good chocolate brand. It’s a marzipan manufacturer. My dude has a soft spot for Ritter Sport, and I grew up with it, but I prefer Lindt or Leonidas.

Milka is the best of the “big brand” chocolates

It’s alright. I used to eat it by the Tafel, back when we’d get high at the cemetery behind my HS

I like RitterSport a little more than Milka. Luckily, both are easy to find in Toronto.

At least in the US you can find Milka (~$2) often significantly cheaper than Ritter Sport (>$4)

Ritter Sport is often around $3 CAD to $4 CAD (~$2.25 USD- ~$3 USD), the plain versions and versions with nuts sometimes costing more than the yogurt, mint or cornflake Ritter Sport lately. I like the newish honey salt almond Ritter Sport.

The Milka are little harder to find. They’re also cheaper here. I’m not sure if the cheap Milka I see are Polish Milka instead of German Milka. I’ll check next time.

You’re welcome. Let us know which of the numerous recommendations you were able to track down in the short time you have.

Firstly, I appreciate everyone’s replies.

Unfortunately, I had to change the itinerary, with Düsseldorf taking Berlin’s place.

At least I was able to combine some German Senf (mustard) with karaage (Japanese fried chicken), given the expat population here.

German fried chicken is excellent.

Düsseldoof! My condolences. The combo sounds tasty, tho.
