BEER (2017-2023) - What did we drink (today/recently)?

The Brightest Star by Wandering Soul Beer (Beverly, MA) - Hazy IPA

Mix of citrus (grapefruit, lime, lemon) and some peaches and melon which lingers throughout the sip but some grassiness and floral notes get added later. Very smooth, creamy mouthfeel with the addition of oats. Dry, medium bitter finish which disappears quickly. Overall good but not outstanding hazy IPA.

Miami Pop! by Grimm Artisanal Arts (Brooklyn, NY) - Fruited Sour

Really good sour ale with great balance between the fruit (dragonfruit and mango) and the tartness of the sour. Vanilla adds a nice pop of background flavor and the milk sugar balances everything out. Very refreshing.

Oktoberfest Maerzen by Hacker-Pschorr (Munich, Germany) - Maerzen

Maerzen with a lot of caramel and bready flavors and malt backbone. Not overly sweet but with a noticeable sweetness throughout. Slight spiciness makes it not too one dimensional. Very smooth, nearly creamy mouthfeel. Feels quite light.

Toucan by Hobbs Brewing Company (Stann Creek District, Belize) - Hefeweizen

A summer hefe with its very mango forward flavor profile but the typical grassy, wheat flavors get pretty much lost in the mango flavors. They are recognizable with the typical banana and spices but too much in the background. Overall its an “earthy” mango drink.

What a… refreshing… change of pace from the recent fruity stabs at canned popularity. No mango, buzzy name and graphics.

Go to store. Buy flashiest/cleverest 4-pack that pops your eyes out. Taste. Describe defects. Never buy again. Repeat. Sad.

But it wasn’t that great compared to some of the recent sours and IPAs - too light and too much focus on the malt than the hops
But I have a few other “classical” German ones in the fridge - hopefully they are better

You see the pattern, though, right?

I think you desperately try to see patterns when there are no patterns.

It’s right there in front of you. The beers you review just aren’t that interesting.

I beg to differ, they sound pretty interesting to me.

Anyway I had a Pliny today

That’s obviously a very subjective assessment (and more just a sign of your inexperience in beers)

Diagree all you like. I won’t disagree about Pliny, yet you see the difference in labeling, yes? No need for grapics or wit on Adderal.

You have no idea. Carry on.

What does a flashy label have to do with anything? I can appreciate a cool looking beer label.

This one’s pretty cool

A good beer too.

It’s cotton candy.

You could riff on Kieth Richards, too. Nothing to do with beer.

Glorifying hose wranglers’ names is just beneath the craft. The beer should sell itself. Except there are too many brewers and too little shelf space. Yawn.

Given today’s sports news news, not sure where to admire the inventive advertising campaign that had legs and kept a brand on the shelves:

Akexandr by Schilling Beer Company (Littleton, NH) - Czech Pilsner

Pilsner are a balance between the bready, malty backbone and the bitter hop flavors. Many pilsners often tend to lean more towards the malts whereas this one is surprisingly hop-forward with quite a spicy hop flavor and a long lasting bitter finish.

Festbier by Human Robot (Philadelphia, PA) - Festbier

Quite light festbier with a mild bready backbone which is always present but a bit too much in the background. Otherwise quite hoppy flavors with a mix of spicy bite, grassy notes and interestingly a quite strong floral taste at the end. Dry and quite bitter finish. Overall interesting festbier with a quite unique flavor profile
