BEER (2017-2023) - What did we drink (today/recently)?

If your in the Northeast. Hermit Thrush from Brattleboro VT is a brewery that I am happy to spend moola on. Not every single beer I’ve tasted is great but when they hit, they are the best sours made in the usa (to my taste)

I live South of Annapolis MD so Brattleboro is not happening anytime soon, but I love to hear that the place has great beers/sours! I think I read half a dozen Archer Mayor books about Joe Gunter and this adds to the reasons I could see myself visiting.
I hit a huge brewery called BC Brewery in Hunt Valley MD and it was pretty cool. The sours were only ok and the IPA was a bit mundane, but the thing I liked was that you got a card, you poured your own beers and then you are billed by the ounce. So I was able to enjoy 4 beers, with 5 ounces each, and not get schnockered. The Cucumber Melon Gose was good, but more as a refreshing thirst quencher rather than an ale. The Herding Cats IPA was ok, but not great. The bad part is that I have forgotten the name of my favorite sour there… Old age is a bear.

I always stop @ stateline liquor in Elkton when i drive to dc…though, the selection has gotten so large, i sometimes wonder what;'s fresh…

Beer cans should have their filling dates printed on the bottom

Arrowmatic by Arrow Lodge Brewery (Covina, CA) - DiPA

A bit of a middle of the road west coast IPA (which isn’t bad) and very solid beer. Citrus notes upfront, some piney notes later and a medium bitter, dry finish. No hints of tropical, dank or similar notes but that’s sometimes what you are looking for.

Sunshine Pils by Troegs Independent Brewing (Hershey, PA) - Pilsner, German

Very crisp pilsner with a lot of grassy, wheaty flavors as the backbone but overall a relatively light beer. Some malt notes with very light hints of sweetness in the background. Quite high carbonation. Typical German-style pilsner.

some do, a lot dont or un readable

Argentinian and German brother-on-law in Berlin come up with recipes, and BrewDog Berlin does the brewing for them (at the brewery which was formerly owned by Stone who failed and went back to San Diego).

Poor Harry! - American IPA- Gorilla Cerveceria Berlin - Germany. 6,6%. Brewed at BrewDog Berlin.
Bready and on the sweet side but tolerable. Creamy and smooth mouthfeel. Piney, a bit herbal. A pleasant enough “American IPA” but nothing really stands out. Poor gorilla!

Quadrophenia - Quadrupel - Van Moll brewery - Netherlands. 10,2%
Now I remember why I no longer drink most Belgian dark beer. I taste mostly candied sugar and liquorice, medicinal bitterness and warm alcohol. Time to break out my Rochefort 10 again.

.
Framboise - Raspberry flavoured Lambic - Boon brewery - Belgium. 5.0%

From my stash. I drink one or two bottle every year. It’s so fine and easy drinking that I go through a whole bottle by myself in no time. Creamy champagne-like beer. One of the legendary flavoured Belgian lambics. Wannabes just need to bow and show respect by not making crappy flavoured sours.

Original glass!

Ten FIDY - Bourbon Barrel Aged - Imperial stout - Oskar Blues Brewery (Monster Beverage Corp). 12,5%
Stupid can design. I hate it. Can’t see any info. Anything! Where’s that guy who approves can designs? Designs like these should be dismissed.

Sweet, burnt sugar. Chocolate, whisky-esque (I have never tasted bourbon) and toasty coffee. Medium bitter woods. Less boozy and intense than the Scotch ale I had the other day. Still a nice imperial stout. Beer gets a high score, can design gets nothing!

Ten FIDY - Imperial stout - Oskar Blues Brewery (Monster Beverage Corp). 10,5% 65 IBU
Not very boozy tasting considering the ABV. Nutty, dark chocolate, some salt liquorice and ash. Surprisingly fruity. Wow. A perfect imperial stout. Highly enjoyable.

Didn’t drink this one and the barrel-aged version side by side so not sure which I would like more but both are fantastic that’s I know.

Found this in my stash. Have posted it before. So, after 2 Ten Fidys this porter seems weak and “pathetic”.

I tend to buy less and less cans where there is no date on it - too many disappointments

Well, yeah. After a Roquefort, a Brie is going to seem really weak.

Moose Mousse - Chocolate stout - Fierce Beer - Scotland. 4,5%
A gusher. Super fizzy on the tongue (I hate this mouthfeel, and even worse it’s a super fizzy stout). Only a hint of chocolate, unlike advertised. Watery. Forgetable.

Brain Candy - DDH NEIPA - Yankee & Kraut brewery - Ingolstadt, Germany. 7,4% Brewed at Hoppebräu, not too far from Munich, towards Austria.

Loral Cryo, Citra Cryo, Idaho 7 Cryo

Alcoholic is the first reaction. The alcohol warmth lingers till the end. Medium bitter, nicely dry finish with a sour “bite”. Barely creamy palate. Almost fermented pineapple is how I would describe the flavour. A bit more alcoholic than some others of this style. Yeasty fermented pineapple smell.

I remember passing through Ingolstadt taking the train from Bamberg to Munich. Isn’t Ingolstadt where the Reinheitsgebot order was signed in 1516? It’s also the HQ of Audi and more. It was the setting for the film Frankenstein. Beautiful and atmospheric medieval Altstadt/Old Town. Germany has many such old towns.

Small 25cl bottles. Beer from Tenerife, I think. The texts on the label is so tiny.

IPA from a craft brewery in Lanzarote’s capital and the only one real craft brewery that has a tasting room. OK IPA, could be old, as in not too fresh. Almost no tourists staying overnight here in this rural village in the far north of the island, or staying as long as we are. The beer costs far too much for most locals. Industrial beer is like 90 cents a bottle.

Going to their tasting room in the capital on Friday when it’s open in the afternoon. The rest of the week only in the evening, when we can’t go.

Vice CranZu by Wild Barrel Brewing (San Marcos, CA) - Fruited Sour

A bit too much tart (cranberries) on tart (yuzu) on tart (sour) - even though there were distinct flavors of tartness it got a bit one-dimensional and boring (and overly tart) after awhile. Not horrible but also by far not on the same level as some other sours from this series.

Peach by Laughing Monk Brewing (San Francisco, CA) - Fruited Sour

Really nice sour which finds a great balance between the fruitiness (but not sweetness) of peaches (without tasting artificial) and the tartness of the sour. Not overly sour, not overly sweet or fruity and very drinkable.

Lunch by Maine Beer Company (Freeport, ME) - IPA

Complex but yet incredible smooth IPA. Large variety of flavors ranging from floral notes, citrus, pine, orange zest, malts combine to a wonderful mix. Matching smooth finish with medium bitterness. It’s understandable why this is a classic, well known and established IPA.

Be my Sunshine by Orono Brewing Company (Orono, ME) - Hazy IPA

Interesting creamy, nearly chewy mouthfeel with a lot of juiciness upfront but followed by quite some funkiness afterwards which even includes some musk flavors. Lower bitterness is in the finish but very long lasting.

Secret Machine - Mango, Papaya, Pineapple, Passionfruit by Dewey Beer Company (Dewey Beach, DE) - Fruited Sour

Refreshing tropical juices with mango and papaya standing out upfront. Pineapple and passionfruit with their natural slight acidity/tartness are a good bridge to the tartness of the sour. Overall excellent, balanced sour - very refreshing.
