BEER (2017-2023) - What did we drink (today/recently)?

Slushy XXL Banana Split by 450 North Brewing Company (Columbus, IN) - Smoothie Sour

Reminds me of a popular kids drink in Germany made from banana and cherry juice (Kiba) with some added vanilla flavor and tartness from the sour. The aftertaste is a bit too much like bubblegum flavor. Good smoothie sour but too much juiciness compared to the tartness.

Hop N Suds by Laughing Monk Brewing (San Francisco, CA) - Pale Ale

Like a more restrained IPA with some citrus flavors and hints of tropical tastes, followed by resinous, dank notes and a medium bitter, dry finish. Not unlike a west coast IPA but instead of dialed up to 11, more a 4-5 which is quite unique and refreshing.

Trinktisch by True North Ale Company (Ipswich, MA) - Lager

House beer/lager of a nice restaurant/beer shop in Belmont, MA with crisp, clear lager-like flavors of biscuit, malts, some light sweetness and some spices towards the end. Perfect to sit at one of their tables and enjoy it with a schnitzel.

Drippin’ Juice by Burning Barrel Brewing Company (Rancho Cordova, CA) - IPA

Typical west coast IPA with notes of citrus upfront which gets slightly more pronounced by the addition of grapefruit (but the addition is quite faint). Otherwise some moderate piney flavors balance out this IPA. Good IPA but not much improvement by the addition of grapefruit.

Highway 1PA by Highway 1 Brewing Company (Pescadero, CA) - IPA

Classical west coast style IPA with strong citrus notes upfront, same malt notes and some faint piney tastes in the background. Dry, relatively low bitterness in the finish. Overall relatively mild IPA which has some resemblance to a pale ale.

Crispy Cream by Highway 1 Brewing Company (Pescadero, CA) - Cream Ale

This cream ale has a lot of resemblance to a crisp, dry light lager with some bready notes, some light citrus flavors (but also very faint some tropical tastes). Light malt flavors work as the backbone of the beer.

A Little Less Conversation - Bourbon BA whiskey sour ale -Eleven / Van Moll colab. Netherlands. 6% 14 IBU
Contains lemon rinds.

Bad label design. Had to look up the breweries to find the name of this beer.
Sour ale aged in bourbon whisky barrel (sometimes even smoked) sounds pretty unappealing to me. And indeed I don’t find it tasty. Lemony sour, woody, thin bodied. Doesn’t work for me. The nicest I can say about this beer and I have the most respect for Van Moll who is very creative and extremely successful but this one is lost on me.

I prefer a little more substance.

Westmalle Extra - Golden ale - Westmalle Trappist brewery - Belgium. 4,8%. 30 IBU
Finally this beer comes in smaller bottle. In the old days it was 750ml only.

Big foamy head. It’s a session version of Westmalle tripel, at least I think so. Everything is a little subtler. The partner drinks the tripel almost every day and I also used to drink it so I still remember the taste. I prefer the tripel. If you have to drive then drink this one.

Aphrodisiaque - (“pastry”) Stout - Dieu du Ciel! - Montreal, Canada. 6,5%

Brought back from Montreal some years back. It’s wonderful that you can buy craft beers anywhere in Quebec. I bought these at a fruiterie/green grocer!

Smells like a chocolate cake. Sweet but not like other “pastry” stouts, most of which are stupid sweet. Very smooth and dry. Lots of dark chocolate and vanilla. Mildly hoppy and pleasantly bitter. Full bodied with lingering chocolate on the palate. It’s like eating and drink a chocolate cake at the same time.

I drank many beers on tap at Dieu du Ciel! brew pub but drank this one and Péché Mortel the most, especially Péché Mortel. So good from the tap and now also in bottle at home.

Pillerkaar - IPA - Pühaste Brewery, Estonia. 6,5% 60 IBU
Tastes of sweet tea at first. Sweetish, juicy papaya and melon. Bready. Medium bitter and dry finish with a mild soapy taste. Would prefer it more bitter but otherwise it’s a pretty good IPA.

Gailur DDH NEIPA - La Superbe / Aerofab colab - France. 6,9%
Citra Incognito, Azacca Cryo, Motueka.

Nice papaya colour and very cloudy. Tastes mostly of papaya and pineapple. Medium hoppy, dry and fine mousse sensation on the palate. OK if it’s NEIPA but not the level of an excellent DDH.

95% Effective - Imperial milk stout - DosKiwis brewing - Girona, Spain. 9,5%
Creamy and smooth. Chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, a touch of wood and sweetness. Not too boozy at 9,5%. Quite enjoyable considering I am not really a fan of milk stout.

Orange the Yammer - Fruited IPA - Pulfer brewery - Croatia. 7% 70 IBU
Brewed with bitter orange, Sabro, Citra. Also contains lactose.

Lots of floating fruit bits in the beer. Sour but some sweetness still comes through. Pithy bitter (noice!). You really taste the oats and lactose. Dry and creamy. Noice lingering bitterness. Alcoholic orange juice. Still noice. Very noice.

(For 2 weeks now oi’ve been watching Australian forensic detective documentaries in the gym and oim hearing the accent in moin hed noight end die-ay.)

Bloody noice! (OK, one last time.)

Karl Strauss Red Trolley Ale, out of San Diego. An Irish red with a pronounced toffee/caramel flavor. It went very well with my chili con carne.

This former Hoosier is still trying to get his head around craft beer from Indiana. There’s no denying Three Floyds, though, even if they are parked near the Little Calumet River, pretty much an open sewer when I lived there.

Coastal Sun Tropaya by New World Ales (San Jose, CA) - Smoothie Sour

Tropical fruit bomb in the best sense - full of papaya, orange, pineapple and peach flavors but enough citrus notes to not get it too sweet. Interesting funky, yet tart finish which throws you off at first but grows over time and completes this smoothie sour.

Storm Surge by Highway 1 Brewing Company (Pescadero, CA) - Stout

Subtle stout with notes of roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate and very light sweetness in the background which is nicely balanced by a dry finish. Not a stout which tries to push the extremes but nicely drinkable with a good, balanced profile.

Alvarado Juice Booster DIPA.
Lots of tropical fruit. :+1:

Great Notion DDH Plump
Tastes like pineapple, with a little bite I guess from the DDHing. :+1:

Raspberry, Blackberry, Cherry Jelly Bean J.R.E.A.M. by Burley Oak Brewing Company (Berlin, MD) - Fruited Sour

Another Jream sour, this time with quite intense red berry flavors, in particular cherry, and some tartness to balance the sour. Even though not overly sweet, the tartness could be a bit more pronounced, so that it doesn’t taste too much like berry juice.

Resin Nuggets by 450 North Brewing Company (Columbus, IN) - DIPA

Hazy IPA with lots of citrus (grapefruit, orange, lime) upfront but than a blast of resiny, dank pine flavors coming through and taking over the beer. Long lingering pine flavors with a very dry, medium bitter finish.

Danker Will Robinson by Alpha Acid Brewing Company (Belmont, CA) - IPA

Good west coast IPA with notes of citrus upfront but immediately followed by a mixture of dank, resiny and bitterness. Both dank and bitterness kind of come and go in waves and are quite long lasting. Some breadiness from the malt in the background

Bonny Doon Blonde by Highway 1 Brewing Company (Pescadero, CA) - Blonde Ale

Very refreshing blonde ale with some biscuit and bread tastes from the malts but balanced with some hoppy, slightly fruity notes and a bit of “bite”/spiciness towards the end. Good, refreshing bitterness without being overwhelming.

Sailor’s Delight by Highway 1 Brewing Company (Pescadero, CA) - Red Ale

Caramel notes upfront and some biscuit notes. Relatively light beer with only faint hoppy flavors. Tastes a bit watery and one dimensional. Not really bad but also too subdued in character to really standout.

Pineapple Papaya Lime Sour by Untitled Art (Waunakee, WI) - Fruited Sour

All the fruits are clearly distinguishable tasting but together form a nice tropical-citrus combination (which would also make a good sorbet) - the counterbalancing tartness is quite prominent and makes it overall a very refreshing sour (especially at a 100+F night)

Black Metal Manita - Black IPA - Van Moll brewery - Netherlands. 7,5%
Chocolatey, caramel and not too sweet. A bit like eating black rye bread but in liquid form. Full-bodied and creamy. Still tasty when I drink it again once in a while. Have had the beer on tap a bunch of times, too.

Switchblade - Porter - Colab Van Moll (NL) & La Pirata (ES). 6,5%
Dark stone fruits and black berries but not too “super fruity”. Some chocolate and coffee. Black rye bread. Rather thin bodied. A decent porter (or is it black IPA?). Maybe my expectation is high.

Royal Porter - Nómada Brewing - Barcelona, Spain. 10% 50 IBU
Chocolate and liquorice tasting. Heavy burnt coffee, almost to the point of ash-y or soy sauce. OK porter but I would rather it without the ash-y after taste.

Jack The RIPA - Cervesa Guineu - Barcelona, Spain. 6,5%
Unfiltered IPA. Centennial & Mosaic.

Pithy bitter and hoppy. Crisp, with a strong pine and citrus flavour. Tastes like what a typical (American-style) IPA should be.

Cumberland (bottle) - Jennings Brewery (Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Co.) - Cumbria, UK. 4%

Light and pleasant, if watery. Mildly yeasty, citrusy. Caramel. Nothing great but nothing bad, either.

Marston’s Pedigree - Marston’s (Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Co.) - Staffordshire, UK. 4,5%
Camarel and malt aroma is prevalent in these typical British beers. Lightly bitter with a touch of sour. A bit thin. Drinkable but could be better. On cask, perhaps.

Brakspear Bitter (Bottle) - Brakspear (Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Co.) - Oxfordshire, UK. 3,4%
Quite drinkable, in a pinch, for such a low ABV. Mild taste of pale malts, caramel and bread. And yes, the “bitter” of the style is there. Also look up “double drop fermentation” technique if you haven’t heard of it.

Tree Hugging Wood Chopping Mother Nature Loving IPA - The Flying Dutchman brewery -Finland. 6%
Centennial, Citra & Mosaic hops. Matured on American oak chips. Brewed in Belgium.

A typical crisp, grassy, piney tasting IPA. Herbal and hoppy but I don’t like the taste of spruce needles.

Over Ripe by Great Notion Brewing (Portland, OR) - Hazy IPA

When you drink this IPA cold it taste like an average one but once it warms up a little bit the mangosteen flavor comes through and it taste like an hazy IPA on steroids - perfect balance of tropical fruit and hoppy bitterness.
