You are on a roll. Gotta track some of these down!
I was surprised how fast parts of San Mateo County have changed to no-masking zones already
I recently bought too much beer and have to make room before I can buy others
Where did you pick up the Sherburps?
Berkeley Bowl West
Just back home in Boston from SF. Had I known…
Not sure where in Boston you are living but Craft Beer Cellar in Belmont is an excellent place to get many also more unusual beers and they also have a great monthly beer club for a good price (especially if you pick up)
Super Fun ! Hazy Hop ! by Paperback Brewing Company (Glendale, CA) - IPA
Decent hazy IPA with stronger focus on a hoppy, piney backbone with relatively strong tropical smell but hardly any fruity, juicy flavor. Long, quite bitter finish. Smelled more interesting than it tasted
Ink (Red Stuff) by Tox Brewing Company (New London, CT) - Smoothie Sour
Tart, thick, sour, subtle sweetness - what is not too love. Very berry tart and sweet combination of strawberry, raspberry, cranberry, pomegranate and cherry balanced by quite strong sourness. Vanilla and lactose really complete the beer in terms of flavor and mouthfeel.
Close to the Newton Craft Beer Cellar. Searching online it looks like Belmont has a more diverse inventory.
Yes - the one in Newton is OK but the one in Belmont is much better. And their restaurant is also nice (at least the take out was always very good)
Stopped in and scored some Three Floyds. Interesting setup. And it really is a “cellar”. Thanks for the tip!
Two Pitchers Brewery radler specialists, Oakland, CA. They have a bunch of other local beers on tap in case you don’t like radlers. I especially liked Disco Queen “rose” with hibiscus and white grape, fairly dry and crisp. Shares outdoor space with Lovely’s burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, fried fish, etc. Lovely’s food is great but crazy long line/wait to order.
Double Mango Flossi by Barebone Brewing Company (San Francisco, CA) - Imperial Fruited Sour
Strong smell of mango but surprisingly mild mango taste - more of a fruity/tropical flavor but nit very pronounced and relatively unbalanced with a strong sour component which takes over the beer. Not really bad but also not what expected as it didn’t have much similarity with mango flavor in general.
Pale Ale by Yazoo Brewing Company (Nashville, TN) - Pale Ale
Caramel, bready, malty start which is followed by some mild piney, resiny notes in the background but mainly has an unusual herbal, even more floral taste with a relatively bitter finish.
S.M.A.S.H Hit - Van Moll - Netherlands. 6%
Single malt, single hop (S.M.A.S.H.) beer. German Callista hops and 100% UK golden Promise malt.
Appearance: cloudy with sediments. Orange. Huge head.
Taste & smell: low bitterness, a bit “spicy”, orange/citrusy. Surprisingly alcoholic for 6%.
Not a typical NEIPA for sure. Glad I got a bottle to try but it’s not something I would buy again. Van Moll, a very small one-man-show craft beer company, makes a vast variety of beer and it’s really cool to be able to try many of their experiments, many of which won’t be brewed again.
I always drink it before and after the food, though.
ROKOT - CRYO DDH IMPERIAL IPA - Bakunin Brewery, Russia. 8.4% IBU 50 (pronounced “ro-kot”)
Finally, just when I’m about to slag Bakunin off for good! A real hoppy, propper “DDH” and tasty beer from this brewery! I’ve been most critical of their other beers so this temporarily changes my mind about their apparent incompetence.
Appearance: hazy orange, small head.
Aroma: yeasty, citrusy. Hoppy. Floral.
Taste: yeasty/bready, some pine or grass (not sure which). Good bitterness. Very good bitterness. Loaded with Simcoe, Mosaic and Citra.
Mosaic is a favourite hop of mine. I’ll bet this hop would save a crappy beer. Anyway, Bakunin also added oat flakes and then fermented with Coastal Haze ale yeast liquid from the American outfit at Copenhagen’s White Labs. Full-bodied and dry finish.
Liquid Candy by Tarantula Hill Brewing Company (Thousand Oaks, CA) - Hazy IPA
IPA was less sweet and juicy than expected and had more of a slightly sweet orange/peach flavor upfront but was overall remarkably smooth with a just very mild piney flavors in the background and little bitterness in the finish.
American wheat pale ale from Three Floyds. Pleasant enough but I wouldn’t have guessed wheat if I hadn’t read the label. Yet I get an extraordinary amount of enjoyment drinking anything from Three Floyds. I grew up across the Little Calumet River from Munster IN where it is brewed. That river was little more than an open sewer back then and the idea of a craft brewery thriving in Munster warms my heart. Progress.
Sly Rye Porter by Yazoo Brewing Company (Nashville, TN) - Porter
Starts first with some biscuit flavors but changes than fast to some roasted malts, chocolate, caramel and coffee. In the dry finish are some subtle spices mixed in with some very faint sweetness.
Baby Kittens by Fat Orange Cat Brew Company (East Hampton, CT) - Hazy IPA
Upfront citrus (grapefruit, tangerine) notes with some subdued tropical (pineapple, peach) flavors. Followed by a nice piney, resinous bite with malt flavors and some spices. Medium bitter finish with some surprising floral notes in the background.
