August trip to New York City

I know you see yourself as the Grandfather of this board, but your post was patronizing. We are adults. Many of us who have common sense, have access to various news sources just as easy as you do, have travelled around the world in situations of varying safety and LIVE in the city in question. Apology accepted.

Siiiiigh. Again, another absolutely incorrect post about NYC. There is a shortage of drivers and car service prices are through the roof.

You Can’t Find a Cab. Uber Prices Are Soaring. Here’s Why.

Let’s Talk About The Real Reason Ubers Are So Expensive Now

Come on. I live here. And yes, I get Ubers all the time. And for six people, with fares the way they are? It’s not hard right now.

No, not incorrect.

I have not had issues finding a cab, Lyft, Uber, or Via. No more than I did trying to hail a cab to work at 7am or back in the evening.

Price (for non-cabs) is a different matter - ymmv re price sensitivity. @shrinkrap is flying business class, so there’s some context.

What do you mean it’s not hard? 6 people would have to be in two cars. $2.75 x 6 is less than the $40 ($20 each - at least) that two Ubers would cost.

My response is only about cost. Not availability. Perhaps I wasn’t clear. ( Edit: I see that the one link I posted was also about availability.)

It depends on where/how far @shrinkrap is going. It doesn’t sound like it’s a major journey, so yeah, I don’t see that as a huge change. For a longer trip? Maybe the subway is worth it, I was just expressing that it may not be a huge cost difference. Of course, her milage may vary. And as @Saregama said, there’s context - just providing an opinion, that may not be “absolutely incorrect”

Well, we can leave the cost determination to Shrinkrap.

On the math, her daughter lives here. You’re assuming 6 people in a single location.

Also, XL vehicles fit 5 (which I have taken a lot of by myself recently even because they’re being priced the same / cheaper than regular).

Even when I had friends visit in pre-COVID times, the math on cab/car vs subway for a group was very favorable to the cab/car - but also unnecessary, because they were on vacation. An extra $2-$20 didn’t actually matter when they were spending many multiples of that per head on food, attractions, and everything else.

It’s mindset and personal budget, not black and white.

Possibly. It is Spanish owned or was when I was there.

@shrinkrap

West side - lower Manhattan …

I remember it as La Bodega but may be I am incorrect and it is Boqueria … Do a Google Check.

It was cool !!!

I was in Manhattan 5 times … So we are talking back in the 1980s at Joe Allen´s & Sardi´s … LONG TIME AGO.

I did, which is how I know there’s no restaurant called La Bodega in Manhattan. I’ve been to several branches of Boqueria (there are four of them). It’s nice, but if I were visiting a city, I’d probably try to eat food that is unique to that city, or at an iconic (and not necessarily expensive) restaurant. Ferrara’s cannoli, which you mentioned, probably fits that description, although it is very touristy and in a very touristy part of town.

I lived on 2d between B and C in the late 1980s-mid 1990s and you are right, Avenue C was an arbitrary dividing line that felt weird crossing. It seemed all psychological though, as it wasn’t any worse than what was happening on my block, which was primarily junkies. I never personally experienced any crime.

I go back to NY once a year and it feels much cleaner and safer than when I lived there. I always get around pretty much exclusively by subway.

I think it generally is, although there’s been a very troubling uptick in anti-Asian violence - old ladies being randomly punched - most likely due to racist idiots blaming Asians for COVID-19. And more of what I think must be crimes of desperation like store and car break-ins, because people’s economic situations have worsened because of the pandemic.

The only time I’ve been a victim of a crime myself was when I first moved here in 1983. I got confused about which subway to take and decided to walk across Morningside Park. This turned out to be a bad idea! because I got mugged at gunpoint and relieved of the $4 I had on me, along with a nice-sized chunk of my faith in humanity.

Last time a bunch of us took the subway, some of us got on, and some didn’t. We got off and waited at the next stop, but couldn’t communicate. I’m guessing we should have planned for that.

Ok, this post is for the long time New Yorkers. After reading this thread, I believe that we can make quite a lot of $$$ by providing a “Hungry Onion NYC Protection Squad” for our tourist brethren coming to town. Anyone up for forming a company? With NotJrvedivici doing the marketing (unintentionally), we’re sitting on a goldmine. :innocent: :male_detective:

Including “deep Queens”?

Probably not what daughter said, but she had some name for it.

Save the Robots was a minor hang out of mine.

I was there a few times. I barely remember it, though, because reasons.

It was definitely on lower westside … It probably closed due to Covid.

La Boqueria is on Spring Street in Soho. We had not gone there.

Chef José Andrés & Chefs Albert & Ferràn Adria have a Spanish Venue similar to Eataly but Spanish products on the Hudson River and West 11th St. I had told Shrinkrap about it … It houses a variety of Spanish venues and restaurants and markets.

Despana is my favorite place for Spanish stuff, in case you’re looking to branch out.

It is in Hudson Yards which is on 11th Avenue and w. 30th street. The address you provided would direct one to Hudson River park in the west village which is a lovely place on its own.
