This pie plate would be handy for someone with problems with manual dexterity, since it makes it less likely for food to get pushed off the edge. (A large flat bowl isn’t as good, because there’s a smooth curve to the rim, while this has an angle.)
The pie plate is also very good when not eating on a regular table, like watching TV on the sofa. A giant magazine made a good lap trivet if the plate is hot
There was a place, years ago, in NYC Chinatown that would serve their Pan Fried Noodles in Pyrex pie plates. They were the perfect vessel. The resto has since closed, I’ll never forget the noodles.
NY Noodletown still does
They do??? I haven’t been there in some time.
The place I recall was Golden Statue, on the Bowery across from a large old bank building. Can’t remember the cross street off the top of my head.
I could swear Ruby Palace in Holmdel, NJ, used to do that as well, but it’s been closed for twenty years, so my memory may have failed me.
Pyrex pie plates run like $5.99 each, current discount price. They are very sturdy. Makes sense.
Last couple of times I was there
Great for entree salads for one when eating on the couch when enjoying a solo evening in. No digging to the bottom of the bowl to find the good stuff, it’s all right there
So do we. You can use a knife with them, they’re a nice size, and they keep the gravy, dal, etc. from spilling.
Yesterday, I picked up two “Blates” from Walmart. ($2.38/each). They fit nicely between the tines in my dishwasher. In my opinion, I think they will work best for pasta dishes with a sauce. If I’m serving more of a dry item (like a breaded chicken breast), then a plate will be easier to use. We’ll see – I’ll report back.
Only if they’re black plastic tho.
I love sporks.
Looks good for anything you’d otherwise chase off the edge of a plate…
