Apples

Good saucing apple, IMHO. Never made a pie out of them. I’d love to know what variety one of my trees is. Best pie apple I’ve ever used. Just the right: crunch, sweet, sour, stoutness.

Tricky issue. In the UK, there are estimated to be about 2.5k different varieties in cultivation. But, in the supermarkets, you’re unlikely to come across anything other than the “same old, same old” few varieties - Cox, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Braeburn, Gala, Pink Lady, Jonagold, Bramley. Other than the Bramleys, which are a distinctive size & shape, I’ve no idea what the ones now sat in the kitchen are.

How badly do you want to know LOL

MyFruitTree is a research opportunity provided through Washington State University…

Go WSU. They’re my #1 source for info on growing apples in the (USA) maritime climate.

Central Texas is not known for its apples, and unless you brave Central Market or Whole Foods, you are not likely to find many varieties in grocery stores. I love Macintoshes and look forward to them, but my memories of Jonathans and Winesaps are just that, memories. I need to try others, but a Mac is just such a wonderful munch. I am thinking of making an invisible cake soon and wonder if the traditional pie selections are needed. The thin, stacked slices seem more likely to hold together, but I may be imagining something that will not match reality. I may try Honeycrisps.

[Gulp!], maybe I don’t need to know that badly.

There’s an apple called “Ludacrisp”?? Guess that farmer (apple breeder?) has a sense of humor.

I loved Macintosh growing up in NY, but haven’t found them much here in California. I’m wondering if when apples are local, how much is because of storage and shipping qualifies. We were traveling in Canada last fall and fell in love with a variety on an Island near Quebec. Or is Quebec the island?

Here they are! Lobo!

Haha. I hear you on the cost. The second link is less expensive - not sure what the full difference is between the two options.

But enough people want to know what their trees are for them both to offer the service. So you’re not alone in wanting to know clearly.

This is my ultimate most favorite seasonal fruit name of all time. I promise you I hooted in public the first time I saw it on the apple table at a local orchard. I was even more tickled because I am 1000% sure the majority of people around here :tm: have ZERO idea what the joke is there, and furthermore if they knew, they would avoid the apple. I, on the other hand, immediately bought a basket full.

IIIII’m gooood. I’ll just enjoy the mystery apples.
