Another Montréal thread

I’m glad you went to Old Montreal. It is in fact touristy but so rich in history. Glad you enjoyed it. But where did you find Dunn’s?!? I went looking for it when I was in Montreal last September but couldn’t find it…

Went to location at 1249 Metcalfe. Just up the road from the Sun Life Building.

Thank you! They used to be located on Ste. Catherine and I feared they closed but I guess they moved. I will make note of it so I can squeeze in a trip during my next visit to Montreal.

For Dunn, you could have gone to the location close to ’ Orange Julep ’ and kill two birds with one stone?!! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: :yum:

Dunn’s used to be our go to back in the 80’s, especially after the clubs closed(3-4am), it was quite the spectacle with the mix of people and the food was really good to. Then I switched to The Main(across from Schwartz’s) deli, but that closed a while back,

I wasn’t planning on saving the best for last but it’s what happened. Before I came to Montréal on this trip I had not heard of Casavant. Saw a mention of it on the subreddit for MTLfood. So I made a last minute reservation. It’s just past the Jean Talon market when you come from downtown. On a quiet mostly residential street.

Really handsome space.

We were seated at a table up front by the windows which had been opened up on a beautiful early September evening. After chatting with our host, we found out that the restaurant was celebrating its second anniversary. On the coming weekend they were planning a block party for the equipe, guests and neighborhood. Too bad we won’t be there.

Our host helped me go over the wine list and pick this really unusual chardonnay from Jura. Had never had anything like it before. Slightly smoky but no oak. A taste of tropical fruits. Great pick from the host/somm.

Surprise! We had oysters. Again! But with it a pétoncle dish. This dish is one of two that we were told has been on the menu from when they first opened. A taste told us why. When we come back (and we will) I will have this again. Every time. Thin slivers of fresh scallop with several sauces and textures. Unctuous and crunchy at the same time. Herbal and earthy. The photo is a bit dark so you can’t make out all the colors that were there.

Then another surprise, flétan! This time for two.

Served with clams and more of the gorgeous late summer corn and sea beans with chanterelles. This was the best thing we ate the entire trip. Incroyable! C’est si bon!

For dessert a tart tatin made with oh so sweet peaches. I am not usually that into peaches. That’s the preferred fruit of the LW. She picked this for us to share. I am so glad she did.

Casavant is an amazing place. If you go to Montréal, you have to go there.

Time to head back to the lower part of North America. Au revoir!

I finally looked up flétan. I had no idea halibut was so popular in Quebec!

A wonderful report. Thank you for sharing! Bouillon Bilk moved recently and, I gotta say, I just don’t like the new space as much. It’s still good, but no longer a place I am excited to go to.

I’m eager to try Casavant - thanks for the recommendation!
