American food wish list for future visits

Jersey City is a food Mecca these days. Flemington is known for outlet shopping.
Brodo tortellini sounds pretty comforting!

A Louisiana baker adapted the Dobostorte to come up with Doberge Cake. ( News to me, not to people who are more familiar with the baked goods of Louisiana!)

I’ve never heard of either of these cakes (I need to get back to Baltimore). The Smith Island looks better to me, but I wouldn’t decline either.

I understand from the replies to the tweet that the Pimlico has Bavarian cream between layers, whereas the Smith cake can have the tendency to be dry.

I haven’t tried any of the 3 cakes!

As a resident of SE PA I’m not really that far from Maryland. I’ll have to keep these in mind next time I find myself there.

Atwater’s sells a version of Pimlico Cake that looks good on Instagram!

Looks like they don’t offer it for shipping (probably doesn’t ship well).

Easier to shop drier cakes :joy:

Whole Smith Island Cakes on Goldbelly

I’m tempted to send this kosher slice selection to some friends who keep kosher!

https://www.goldbelly.com/restaurants/charm-city-kosher/kosher-smith-island-cake-slice-assortment-8-slices.html

The descriptions of some of the Smith Island Cake mentioned Dobostorte as the antecedent. While Doberge clearly comes from Dobos, I think Smith Island Cake looks more like Bavaria’s official regional torte, Prinzregententorte.

They look really tempting (I suppose slices are easier to package and ship than whole cakes). I’ll keep this in mind when my b’day gets closer (about 6 weeks from now). :yum:

Oh, it’s mostly whole cakes available online!

If you want more bang for your buck, buy the original Smith Island Cake from Smith Island, not something off Goldbelly! Slices are usually more expensive than buying a whole cake, you’re paying for the selection.

What a cool thread this is! 1st up on my list, which will probably happen Monday night in the Boise, Idaho area. That part of southern Idaho is famous for its finger steaks, which I also remember from my childhood there. We always had delicious ones, with tender steak, but they can be horrible as well. So keeping fingers crossed, we’ll be able to find good ones.
Other things I want to try include many from @Phoenikia’s list. So much to explore, anywhere, always. I’m of the firm belief there’s excellent food nearly everywhere, it can be difficult to find however.

That should be adopted as the HO motto!

The Pimlico cake is delicious.

Smith Island is good when made well. Not sure if that holds true when shipped to far off lands

Hawaii has their own riff on the Dobosh/Doberge/Dobos cake/torte. I’ve not had it in the Island, but have had it at King’s Hawaiian Bakery in Torrance, CA.

You may have already come across this information in your research, but from what I understand, the Smith Island cake is traditionally made with yellow cake mix

First time I ever saw Smith Island cake was at a Greek-owned diner in York. That was fewer than five years ago, and I haven’t seen it around since then.

We have plenty of Greek-owned diners around here, most with excellent desserts, but I don’t recall seeing anything like the Smith Island cake. Maybe I have to keep a closer eye on the cake case?
