The Aldi’s near me (NYC) is like shopping for groceries in a 99 cent store. I’ll go in regularly for things like milk, eggs, and some canned goods like beans, but it’s rare that I find much else worth buying. I’ve been to Lidl’s a few times and it’s definitely a step up. Fortunately, I have 2 TJ’s nearby. One with a parking lot but a much smaller selection of items. The other with a full selection though no parking at all (obviously unneeded because of population density). For a marginally higher cost, it’s a huge improvement in variety and quality over Aldi’s.
My Aldi’s list is some of the Park Street Deli items, spinach, chocolate chip brioche, cheeses, pecans, canned fruits, canned mushrooms, canned beans, canned corn, canned tomato products, frozen vegetables, frozen black bean chipotle burgers, and frozen chipotle salmon burgers. Sometimes there’s an item in the here-today-gone-tomorrow freezer case I’ll try.
When both Aldi & Lidl arrived in the UK, their marketing position was all about cheap essentials. Come to us to buy X but go to your usual supermarket for Y & Z. Now, there’s been a shift towards marketing themselves for the weekly “big shop”. I’m pretty sure that, if I had to, I could do all of the shopping there - not the choice of brands, little organic produce, etc - I’d have to compromise but I could do it all.
They do price better, IMHO.
Aldi’s finally built in my town. I go there all the time.
