Nothing is stopping me other than I see so little in the way of others doing the same. On the old CH NYC boards there would be new posts every week about a place I had never heard of. So many places I only learned about from other chowhounds. There were spots where I put the first review up on CH. Others would come in and ask questions about it or tell me I was a dope for even mentioning the place. The free flowing discussions were great. I rarely see anything like that here. Maybe it’s I’m just older and grumpier now but I don’t see the same enthusiasm and exchange of information here.
The number of participants on CH was overall much larger than the current food boards like HO or FTC and so there were so much more topics and interests covered. HO is more or less a cooking and ingredients board with some very limited other topics, whereas FTC is very restaurant and new places focus but only with an emphasis on LA and to a certain degree California
In the final 2 weeks, as CH closed it’s forums, I saved many “favorites threads” from home cooking as Word files. Sending you a message with the (long) note of favorite posters and posts I submitted to CH in 2019 as they celebrated 22 years.
A few examples of what I saved:
Pretty much anything by Toronto Jo or querencia
The Canned Beans discussion
Family Favorites Top 10
Meals any parent should know
COTM items so good you’ve made more than 3 times
Do any of you know if there is any possibility of me recovering long trip reports I posted on CH, and did not save? There was so much info in those…my fault for not thinking ahead..I thought CH would be with us forever..silly me!
I’ve not tried to look for specific items with the “wayback” system mentioned. There was how-to discussion of it in another former-chowhounders topic here on H.O.. I’ll see whether I can find that.
I think your best bet is The Wayback Machine. If you remember the date (give or take) of the date you would have posted the trip report, that’ll help. And patience will help even more.
If you know the date, input the chowhound URL in the WB, and then choose the year, then choose the month and a particular snapshot.
I chose2010, then April 6th and got to here
Then click to the location you were at, and (hopefully?) find it that way.
I know someone else had a different way to find it on Google where I think you can drill down via your CH name, but I don’t remember that.
This old discussion from 2022 includes more how-to techniques from naf and others
That’s it! I knew someone had posted the Google search method. So maybe that’ll help @erica1.
Wait! You mean the “critters” thread wasn’t about recipes?
I was wandering around some of the HO boards that I don’t usually read & found the recent post you wrote that mentioned your previous board name here. I was wondering where you went. Welcome back. Still my neighbor in Bklyn Heights?
Although I think that you being older and grumpier may well be an issue
, for me its more about not wanting to engage in what too many of those “free flowing discussions” became on CH. I’ve been pretty impressed that, here on HO (at least on the NYC and Paris threads I tend to participate in) there’s a ton of specific info (& pretty pictures) on places visited, posted by many I’ve known from the CH days, without the argumentative tones and oneupmanship that make me run for cover. But, as honkman said, the smaller #s of posters yield a smaller range of posts and the places well covered here are but a small slice of what’s out there. Probably why I’ve missed you: no one else was writing about Manhatta or Chambers and I wanted some idea of what they were like.
So… been to the Brooklyn Barbuto’s yet? Waxman’s hit another home run and has duplicated his kale caesar, roast chicken & potatoes perfectly.
EatNopal was a prolific contributor. His Great Taco Enyclopedia thread was super-informative.
My favorite thread on CH was a discussion of the differences between a Philly Cheesesteak and a DC Steak and Cheese. And the places that used to serve each vs. the ones that did then.
That was a fun read.
Seriously.
LOL!
