it is sooooooooooo easy to not go there.
just save a mouse - don’t click!
There are also what are you reading/watching, food funnies etc. which are placed on a separate part of the website so it won’t distract from the general food discussions. Although there is some animated discussion about what type of foods people’s critters like to eat. And some people have been recommending food related books they’ve been reading (penned by chefs). We’re a pretty sociable bunch here on ho so as long as the tone is respectful I don’t see a problem with it.
How is it distracting from the rest of the discussion here?
It’s in the Not About Food category, where would you put it?
Chowhound (the real one) was the first place I clicked on every single morning! I was searching this morning for something about eating in Italy (no surprise there) and this just turned up. But my goodness..what a junky site…they can use the name because there is no copyright?
They bought the name.
The interesting question would be - if the new owners of Chowhound would set up similar discussion boards as many years ago and would have reasonable rules would you migrate back to Chowhound (obviously it us hard to predict how successful a new/Chowhound would become again) or would you stay on HO/FTC ?

Vielleicht kann man ja politisch auf deutsch reden, denn….
I think anything non-controversial can be discussed here in any language. There’s always google translate for thems that care enough…
Maybe eGullet too? I was never a big fan but it was pretty popular around then (maybe still is).
eGullet is fairly active,
as is discusscooking
and cookingbites
cheftalk was sold and has suffered similar to CH, it just isn’t dead yet.
netcookingtalk is less active and has a uni-clique culture
eGullet was founded quite close to Chowhound (97 vs 00) - so I would say it was more a “competition” to Chowhound. But they had a bit different approaches and eGullet tended to attract more or the professional food world. There were very long and interesting discussions with Grant Achatz and his team behind Alinea before they started or Nathan Myhrvold posted quite regularly before Modernist Cuisine. Today, it is like all food boards (including HO, FTC) relative quite as Instagram and similar are the food “places”
First off, I would like to make my position clear!
I have nothing against pets and pets lovers, after all, I too have a puppy dog in my household!
I am only expressing my curiosity in finding out that talking about pets in a food blog garnered more replies than food related ones!
Furthermore, since HO is an OPEN FORUM, I believe I have every right is voicing MY OWN PERSONAL opinion….as long as its not politics, religion or sexual orientation related?!
Lastly, I was also wondering what a mess this blog might become, if people start using the premise of ‘ Not about Food ‘ and begin posting topics like Sports, Stock Market, Personal finance, stamp and coin collecting, star gazing……and on and on??!! For sure that will become distracting??!!
My two cents!!
It’s a Not About Food board. CH had one too. If you only want food, don’t click on a NAF post. Simples. ![]()
Actually a nice soccer discussion from time to time would be nice
I’m liking how the Gunners are doing this year, although losing four centerbacks to injury in just a few weeks is worrying. Timber, Calafiori and White can fill in at CB, but that would leave the bench thin and may result in yoofs getting some seat time at the Emirates to back up MLS.
So I suffered through Frau Gobert’s endless criticism of my classwork for nothing? I hate when that happens…
