2026 NYC EATS — Where & what did you eat?

Between the salt in the sandwich and the sugar in my iced tea, I am viciously dehydrated right now.

come now, let’s not bring health into our enjoyable eats thread

Sorry, but some of us do have to watch our sodium intake. I’m sure I’m not the only one. And I probably will have a Popeyes sandwich this year.

An epic Lunar New Year meal at Nyonya in Manhattan, and now we are full of prosperity and peace and spring.

First, Prosperity Salad, which we were told to toss in unison with our chopsticks, for prosperity! One of those red envelopes contains a lottery ticket, which I took possession of. If it hits, I will share the winnings with my compatriots @rrems, @SteveR, @Ike and @DaveCook (and their companions, where applicable, we were a party of seven). This had a lot going on, a riot of flavors and textures (raw salmon, pomelo, papaya, jellyfish, etc.), and was also very messy, what with the tossing and the shreddiness.

Roti, absolutely addictive and I could’ve eaten all of it, and pickled vegetables, not that interesting even for a pickled vegetable maven like myself.

Peace Cracker, a mysterious name for vegetables and bean curd skin. This took me back to the beloved Cantonese dishes of my childhood. The server overheard me raving about it and wondering how to make it, and he came back to tell me to fry some garlic and add vegetables and soaked bean curd skin. I think there might be more to it than that.

Spring Breeze Delight, which was noodles, a rather tough leafy green that I did not recognize, chicken and dried scallop.

Chicken, I think, and duck. I will let the chicken/duck eaters review these (I did pick out some flower mushrooms, always a treat).

And last, unless I missed something, and I may have, there was a ton of food, Smile and Prosper, i.e. shrimp with shredded curry leaves (not discernible by me) and cereal (?). I expected to like this more. The shrimp were lackluster, not quite crisp enough, and the other stuff was kinda bland.

All in all, some great stuff, some less great (but still pretty good) stuff, and a very festive evening overall.

Looks like a fab meal. Our HK buddy introduced us to Nyonya in the early aughts, and I still remember the squid with plum sauce. I just looked at the menu and can’t seem to find it, however.

The Prosperity Salad has a little dish of plum sauce next to it, so they definitely could whip you up that dish if you asked!

Maybe it’s the house special squid  It’s been over 20 years :grimacing:

Don’t let me dissuade you from your noble quest but I don’t think you’re controlling for the key variable.

Which is the key variable, according to you? There are plenty of variables, here.

Intoxication level would be my guess.

Was it on Flushing Ave?

It may have been? If you were driving home from Hart Street to the LES, is that the way you would go?

Oh, that wasn’t an issue. It was a Memorial Day outdoor afternoon thing - I probably had a single beer.

Maybe…

Popeyes:

Zero beers - good fast food

One beer - very good fast food

Two beers - fine cuisine

>= three beers - food of the gods

Sorry to have missed it after everything!

(Speaking of curry leaves, I’m still craving the curry leaf mushrooms from Kopitiam)

Adding the special LNY menu for its very entertaining dish names:

I’m gonna haul out StreetView, because I’m pretty sure I’d recognize the Popeye’s (but it’s a been a few years, so maybe not). I think it was not freestanding, and on a block that was more industrial than commercial or residential. It was the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, 2022, so maybe the A team wasn’t working - maybe I was lucky enough to have my sandwich prepared and served by crew members who were trying to prove themselves by going the extra mile.

Complicating this is that the sandwich seems to have been introduced in February of 2023, a date I definitely would not have been sitting in someone’s backyard. Mysterious!
