Maria C. In Mission Local.

Maria writes about the makeover at Berreta, 1199 Valencia in the Mission . She liked the fritto misto:

A tumultuous pile of golden fried squid, prawns, fennel, and shishitos came to the table hot and delicately crunchy, without a hint of greasiness. A delight, and would go great on a hot day with a cold birra in hand.

We love As Kneaded. It’s great to see that they’re going to have a real cafe in the library. Zocalo Coffeehouse down the block has opened a little outpost at the main Hayward Public Library.

Falafelland in SF Tenderloin opened about a month ago at 265 Golden Gate with city assistance.

From Coyote

Soleil Ho, formerly of SF Chron and cofounder of Coyote, writes about the start of her career writing about restaurants in the Whittier neighborhood and Nicollet Ave of Minneapolis.

Excerpt:

When I first moved to Minneapolis as a freshly-pressed college graduate in 2009, it didn’t take long for me to glom onto the Whittier neighborhood’s stretch of Nicollet Avenue, where Somali, Malaysian, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Mexican places scrunched up shoulder-to-shoulder like they were riding the rush-hour bus together. There, the familiar smells, words, and sounds made me — a child of Viet refugees and a product of multiculty New York — feel like a plausible part of the city’s fabric. Between shifts at the crappy sandwich shop I worked at in St. Paul, I’d spend my precious income at the many immigrant-owned restaurants on Nicollet. At the now-closed Harry Singh’s, the Trini doubles were a blessed oasis of mouth-inflaming spice in an otherwise not-so-piquant culinary landscape. My husband and I got our wedding cake from the neighborhood’s panaderia, Marissa’s, where they gamely reproduced the text of a Toynbee tile with gel icing, no questions asked.

We are super-excited about this news:

Estevan Silva, alumni of three-Michelin-star Quince, and Melissa Chou, ex-pastry chef of the one-star Mister Jiu’s in Chinatown, will open at O2 Artisans Aggregate, 2311 Magnolia St., in a West Oakland industrial park. Open only on weekends with limited outdoor seating, the two separate bakeries are self-funded and their owners are the only staff. We first had Ms. Chou’s desserts during the short-lived Moroccan-Fusion phase of Aziza, Mourad Lahlou’s very fine bistro in SF’s Richmond, and were completely wowed. She is one of the best pastry chefs we have encountered in 60 yrs of dining out.

Sorry I didn’t note where I got this blurb from (my main PC is down) but it was probably SF Chronicle.

Chou plans to have some pastries available for walk-ins, but main focus is on pre-ordering through her website for pick-up at O2 Artisans. Not sure about Silva’s set-up but it might be similar - if anyone goes there later this spring, please give us an update.

Chu’s Grand Opening opens in Feb 2026 and will offer baked goods inspired by classic Chinese bakeries, overlaid with her fine-dining training: bolo bao filled with sweet cheese and seasonal fruits; cakes flavored with plum and red shiso or raspberry and yuzu.

Silva’s Studio Estepan, open in late spring 2026, will offer creative sourdough baked goods, from Korean salt bread to Japanese shokupan made with heirloom grains. He will offer savory items like chorizo topped breads and blue corn masa conchas.
