You might be able to get them fresh now–just not from California waters.

I had some when we were up in Washington State a couple of weeks ago. It was the best I’ve had in years, and there was a lot of it. I didn’t realize that I’ve gotten so used to our small expensive northern California portions.

I was wondering where the comkercial harvest is coming from. I knew it wasn’t from California.

If you’re ever considering traveling in the Port Angeles, WA area (often called the “gateway to Victoria BC” as the car/people ferry runs from there), check the Chamber of Commerce site for when they hold their annual Crabfest event. A lot of Dungeness crab is caught there by the smaller fishing boats, and you can stuff yourself with fresh Dungeness prepared different ways at a price well below what we pay here in CA. At the end of the day they used to hold auctions for buying fresh crabs, which was REALLY cheap (but you’ll need a kitchen, LOL).

Port Angeles is along the San Juan de Fuca Straits, halfway to the Pacific. It is also one of the main entrances to Olympic National Park.

The recreational crab fishing season is open in NorCal. If you’re willing to fish or trap crabs yourself, you can get them now. A lot of people go the Pacifica pier, no license required. Could go in a recreational crab boat, or take kayaks and traps out to Poinr Reyes.
