2025 Northern and Central California Food News and Journalism [SF Bay Area, Northern California, Central California, Northern Nevada]

This is an old article from Edible East Bay that I remembered and Googled for at link. Both nurseries for avocado varieties that it links to, remain in business in the Bay Area.

In this video my dad and I head out on the boat for opening day of the boat-based rockfish season! We catch a variety of fish, Dungeness crab, and make some killer beer-battered fish tacos!

Several sources are reporting that the Fog City Diner, which dropped “Diner” from its name 10 years ago, closed for good on Friday 5/30/2025. For me, it will always be this:

Wow did Phil Frank get a bad meal or what? Kidding….it was over priced diner fare for yuppies. Went in college, felt underwhelmed and ripped off…and poor service (IIRC, it was really bad). Afterwards had a conversation that Fog City was opened after the movie “Diner”. Recreating sentimental late night dive food on the west coast for yuppies seems way out there. After all there were plenty of late night places all over SF. Remember Sparky’s or Grubstake…or El Faralito? But, right it wasn’t really diner food or late night. I didn’t post anything about the demise because I didn’t have anything positive or funny to say.

It’s too bad you had a bad experience there; I had nothing but good times there. They were open many years so maybe some periods were better run than others.

It was a long time ago and I got over it but I remembered because it was weird but I was young. Restaurant reviews and info was different back then…newspapers, a little radio and word of mouth and not much else. Newspapers were king with reviews. I worked near there in the 90s and went with work. It was okay but lunch was on work so hard to complain.

My family and visitors had some good times at Fog City. Last time was maybe 5 years ago and I remember something was different. Maybe just the name, but I think also some of the menu. Were they part of the same chain as Rutherford Grill in Napa?

Nope

Kadvany in SF Chron writes about no-tax-on-tips: Does it favor front-of-the-house over kitchen staff; will it be an excuse for employers not to raise wages; and will it be meaningless for many servers who don’t anyway pay taxes dues to low incomes?

Interesting article about new restaurants opening up in Menlo Park. The Korean Taiwanese place sounds good as well as new Indian on El Camino. The new place that replaced 75 year old Ann’s Cafe gets a big write up-Clark’s Oyster Bar. I live mainly in Santa Barbara but also hang out in MP and they have one in each of my locations.

Elena K grew up in MP so she was a good person to pick to write this up.
