I bought the Hellman’s Avocado Mayonnaise DRESSING, thinking it was regular mayo. It’s okay with tuna salad but it’s not mayo. I should have read the label, it also has canola oil in it, reducing the actual avocado oil. For $2.58 it’s okay. I think I paid $4.75 or so. I won’t buy it again but for some uses it would be fine.
Spotted at the East Hayward GO: Rogue Creamery’s Brutal Blue. A very “brawny” cheese–good if you like really strong blues.
How much was it? I saw it at GO a few years ago for about $10/lb. At retail it was about $40/lb. Then it was my Pick of the Year and I bought a couple of pounds.
How’s Brutal Blue different than their ‘Regular’ Blue?
Here’s a link to my June 2022 post on Brutal Blue.
Brutal is cave aged for about 3 years and was the funkiest Blue I’ve had. The Rogue River Blue, which I haven’t tasted, was voted the best cheese in the world and was served in the White House a few years ago at a State Dinner with President of France Macron. I haven’t seen the River Blue at GO and don’t expect to. The River Blue is aged 9-11 months then wrapped in syrah grape leaves which had been soaked in a pear tincture.
If my local GO has the Brutal I’d get a few pounds of it because I like it but others may find it too funky, approaching durian outskirts.
This the nearest you will ever get to the greatest cheese in the world for $10/lb or whatever it is now.
I’ll have to check on the price when I get home. And I agree with you on the strength/funkiness–it reminds me a lot of this great Bleu d’Auvergne I got at La Fromagerie in the Marina a few weeks ago. It’s the kind of cheese you can only have small pieces of. Like the Bleu d’Auvergne, the Brutal Blue goes really well with this muscadine jam a friend gave me.
I’d tossed the original wrapper, so I don’t know how much per pound the cheese was. It must have been a good price if I’d gotten it.
Newest find: Mikawaya Mango Peach Sorbet Mochi. I love mochi ice cream balls, so it was nice to see ones made with sorbet.
I checked Oakland GO yesterday for the Rouge Brutal Blue but they didnt have it. My guess is that it was in the $11.99/lb range, give or take a buck.
Has anyone else seen it? I want it. I don’t have a car and am in the East Bay. East Hayward is out of my range.
After some digging, it’s $5.99 for 7 oz. wedge.
Only a few stores have it, including Palo Alto. Maybe someone in that area can get some and tells what they think.
Rogue Creamery Brutal Blue cheese.
the brutal is not in Santa Cruz (yet?). checked a few times. they did have it last time it was available and I made a tasty souffle with it. intense.
I checked an old receipt, and that’s the price I paid.
I didn’t see it during the weekend.
The Rogue River Brutal is still on the shelves at the East Hayward GO. It’s tucked away on the shelves, but it’s there.
According to “JJ” at Grossoutwine, the GO Spring Wine Sale will run March 4-10 with some special deals on the app.
