2024 New Orleans Report

Buying quarts is indeed not particularly convenient for a visitor to your faire city.

A cone from the fantastic Creole Creamery, OTOH? Totes doable. And delish.

Thanks, unfortunately today is our last day, coulda used another 3-4 days but perhaps next year.

No, we headed straight to seawitch, we may stop for a po boy today at liuzzasa’s by the track.

We celebrated our anniversary last night at GW Fins, started with the lobster dumplings, which reminded me of a lighter take on lobster ravioli: delicate, homemade wrappers, lobster filling, and a rich sauce. My wife had the beet salad, predictably, I found it boring, but she absolutely loved it.

Our main course was an easy choice: locally caught sheepshead. We’ve had it before from our local seafood shop in St. Augustine and really enjoyed it. The Parmesan crust added a great contrast to the fresh, mild fish. I’m not usually a fan of fish paired with cheese, but this dish was an exception.

On the side, we tried their collard greens with dirty rice and chicken liver debris. The rice was good, but the standout was the greens, somehow they managed to build rich flavor into the “liquor”, easily one of the best renditions I’ve had (and I’ve had many over the years).

Dessert was hot bread pudding, more akin to French toast in texture. It was indulgent and delicious, something I’d probably eat every night if it weren’t for preserving my girlish figure. As it was our anniversary, the restaurant treated us to an after dinner glass of port and a couple of very good chocolate truffles.

These high-end dinners feel like an incredible bargain compared to similar experiences in NYC or St. Augustine.

Oh I get it but it’s so good all other ice cream pales by comparison

Hopefully I’ll have a chance to try it some day!

Happy anniversary!

I hear you!

Last dinner of our visit at Irene’s. I was a little hesitant given the prevalence of so much bad Italian food in the south but Irene’s creole influenced fare, served in one of the nicest rooms in the city, was very good.

We both started with turtle soup, where the broth was closer to a minestrone than the creole standard and I had their crispy half duck, not sure we see duck on too many Italian menus but it was great.

In the end, a great eating visit, still about 50 places we’d like to try!

Headed to Houston the next day, we experienced catastrophic electric car trouble on the way, more on that in my Houston trip report.
