2024 Food Garden

I described it here, and included a link, but don’t know if the link still works .

Here’s a screenshot

Would wind chimes help?

To me, there is nothing better than the smell of chiles roasting over a charcoal fire, or even a propane torch. If you set them single file on a cookie sheet and freeze them, then put them frozen in a freezer bag, they’ll keep a long time. You probably knew this, but i’m getting chile fever here in the desert southwest US.

Back at work the salad bar used to have a set price, so some of us would really load up on salads, they were tasty and better than a lot of the dishes. I got the worst hives of my life, ended up in urgent care, and the doc put me on several meds that finally took care of it. I talked to a friend that used to be a food services manager, and she told me she didn’t eat the salads because they didn’t wash the lettuces. So I think you’re spot on.
Then they stated charging by the ounce and the fun was over. So were the hives

Good lord- you have some determined and picky, prissy grape thieves. Maybe hardware cloth over the top? I’d have thought you were home free.

We have wind chimes hanging off the corner of the cage.

Irish Spring? Dog hair? :joy:
I have some of that shiny ribbon to drive the birds nuts.

Some people hang CDs on fishing wire in Toronto.

I had my young cherry tree covered with a tomato cage and frost cover, then realized the Japanese beetles were still attacking it. I then put one of those big draw string bags over it, and the bugs were still attacking. So I took the bag off, and l guess I’ll find out next year if that tree is a survivor.

Sigh…

We bagged our grapes last year, and “it” tore all the bags off. This year we fortified with spikes ala Alcatraz and you see the results. :rage: Earlier this year we trapped several possums which were devastating our strawberries. Maybe they’re back, or maybe raccoons?

Did you ever read a book called The $64 Tomato? I think we’re up to The $300 Grape.

We gave up on grapes.

Have you found any “scat”? I’ve been boning up on my scat identification.

How many of you know this favorite?

I found a different kind of scat near my grapes which must have kept the grape varmints away. :grimacing:

Not a lot of them and tiny but tasty!

They are relentless. We’ve used electric fence to ward off varmints. If they’re climbing, say some soil-grounded chicken wire, and hit a live wire that’s positioned a few inches above, that’ll normally turn them around. Opossums are so empty-headed, one often needs a second live wire. I once watched an opossum repeatedly charge an electric fence’s low wire, getting zapped multiple times. A turtle, even a cucumber will shy away from electric shocks. Opossums … … well, God had a plan for them:
“Sorry Dude, we ran out of brains. But, I’ll give you the most teeth of any mammal to make up for it.”

Come to think of it, that fence-charging opossum did grimace at the fence between charges, showing its teeth.

Fall shelling peas. We’re still trying to eat through the last of our tomatoes, cukes, and squash, so the peas- once shelled - will go in the freezer.

I thought of freezing them but I wasn’t sure if I’d still be able to char and peel them after defrosting- can you ?

Fall garden harvest.

What a portrait! Is that an Asian pear in the corner? It deserves a close up!

I have one of those baskets!

Raspberries! So late! (Ours finish up in late July.)

Yes - Asian pear. The variety is “Korean” (one of my favorites), but they’re not quite there yet. Taste is good, but texture isn’t quite ripe. Soon!

These are primocane raspberries. They produce very abysmally in the summer on the 2nd-year canes, but prolifically in the fall on the 1st-year canes. It’s my favorite type to grow. We’ve been struggling since we moved to a new property to grow them, but now that they are in raised beds, good soil, and in full sun, we are hopeful. Check in with me next year for the final verdict!
