I’ve been able to grow them easily in the past, but we have had weird weather this summer!
Weirdly, the zucchini and okra have been really really slow this summer. I have 2 okras so far, on 15 plants. Most aren’t even blossoming yet, about 3 weeks late.
My cousin’s stepson (who is a Cornell grad) and his SO (a teacher) let the chickens run through their house near Watsonville, all the time. This would have been around 2000, so before there was more anxiety about bird flus, but definitely most people would have known letting your children and chickens mingle inside a building where you eat and sleep is not a great idea, even 23 years ago.
This is what can happen (occasionally ) when people raised in the burbs raise chickens. My farmer cousins couldn’t believe it.
I’m jealous- the horrendous (for us) hailstorm knocked the remaining figs off my little tree. And the one I had bagged was chewed through and gobbled up. I only got one to eat.
I’m not sure. It was a neat little quarter-inch hole through both layers. It didn’t look like what a bird would do, too small for a squirrel, too wrong for ants, which I’ve had problems with before. We have lizards, but I can’t see one climbing up 3-4 feet to tear a little hole in the netting to chew on the fig.
