2023 Food Garden!

Does anyone know why my eggplant is blossoming but not making fruit this year? Lack of pollinators?

We had a hose mister running outdoors in the shaded areas during the really hot, hot days. They loved it.

Maybe pollinators; I don’t know if eggplant are self-pollinating. Where I am, being too hot is usually the problem when there are flowers but no fruit set. I don’t grow eggplant, but I recently read they like it cooler than others in the nightshade/solanaceae family.

I’ve been able to grow them easily in the past, but we have had weird weather this summer!

Weirdly, the zucchini and okra have been really really slow this summer. I have 2 okras so far, on 15 plants. Most aren’t even blossoming yet, about 3 weeks late.

I had thought of letting them take a dip in our pool.

But then …

I’ve got an easily solution.

At night, just borrow from your neighbor’s tree.

It’s an IOU.

When your own tree blossoms and starts bearing fruit like a well-fed child, you can pay back on the IOU.

You let them in the house to enjoy the AC :joy:

My cousin’s stepson (who is a Cornell grad) and his SO (a teacher) let the chickens run through their house near Watsonville, all the time. This would have been around 2000, so before there was more anxiety about bird flus, but definitely most people would have known letting your children and chickens mingle inside a building where you eat and sleep is not a great idea, even 23 years ago.

This is what can happen (occasionally :joy:) when people raised in the burbs raise chickens. My farmer cousins couldn’t believe it.

So you put protective bags over them and who got to them?

@mts , I think racoons because the bags are mauled and the bits of fig pretty mashed. So far though, I’ve had more than last year

There are about 10 beauties on the tree right now that I want to leave one more day …. :face_with_peeking_eye:

Oh those stinkers! Any chance of dusting the exteriors with powdered cayenne?

Maybe. But that sounds good! They might like it!

I have now picked one zucchini and one okra :joy:

Mildew has hit one patch of White Scallop Squash, a little later than usual.

I’m jealous- the horrendous (for us) hailstorm knocked the remaining figs off my little tree. And the one I had bagged was chewed through and gobbled up. I only got one to eat.
