It was probably the $60 tomato last year but with inflation now it’s $64.

It is apparently 70 degrees Fahrenheit here tonight at 1:44 AM. I can’t believe that. Our record high at night is 65 in July. What is happening?

I think we had this a few years ago. It started late in a season but the spores must have been present in the soil because the following year the infection happened pretty quickly. We moved our basil to new pots/soil about 30 feet away from the prior location without apparent infection last year. Will look for resistant varieties now!

I’ll have my usual gazpacho garden (tomatoes, various peppers, cucumbers) and the arugula keeps re-seeding itself. I’ll also plant some eggplant and, of course, basil. My rosemary, sage, oregano, and tarragon are perennial. That’s in town.

We now have a family place on the Chesapeake, and there I’ll grow more gazpacho and, since the soil is sandy, I’ll try peanuts and cotton, mainly as entertainment for our young grandchildren. Oh, a we’ll plant watermelon, if only because of the children’s song, Down by the Bay. We have a very productive fig tree, which is nice, and tons of rosemary. I’ll plant fennel again, and more basil.

Nice! Do you have a problem with birds picking your figs? If so, what do you do?

I don’t worry about the birds picking the figs, as the hornets scare them away. Picking figs in competition with hornets takes some care, but it’s no problem before 10:00 am. We do have a lot of deer and rabbits, but the rosemary and lavender help a lot.

I was examining some tender rose leaves in my back yard and spotted the year’s first clump of aphids trying to hide out. I bet they think they’re cute.

Went for a brief stroll in our gorgeous 63° weather and gathered some tree collard from my community garden plot. That was shockingly good for my mental health!

I splurged and bought 20 packs of various seeds. A little shopping therapy. Will post what I purchased when it arrives!

Still 2 months before I can plant most seeds where I live.

What else did you get?

I’m nursing my herb, pepper and tomato seedlings in the basement and just fertilized my garlic beds for the first time this season. Spring is here, but we’re not out of the danger zone for frost- in fact, we’re supposed to drop into the 20s on Monday.

Garlic is looking good so far - I planted 196 cloves and it looks like I only lost 5 or 6 to squirrels or other pests. The shoots are 3-4" tall already. My ramps are coming out too, albeit a bit more slowly. Elderberries, raspberries, blackberries and gooseberries all leafing out, as are my perennial herbs. My rhubarb mysteriously died last year, so I ordered a new variety and have a new spot ready for it.

Beautiful!

I’ve been growing that Noble spinach for the last year or two. I just grabbed whatever I could get during the pandemic when was unable to get my regular variety. Lucky me - it’s done fantastically well. So lush, I’m really happy I found it. I hope it works for you.
